For my team’s action project we began by researching economic inequality and its causes within the United States.\u00a0 Through this process, we found a lack of access to financial literacy education to be an underlying factor in determining the economic success of individuals once at an adult age.\u00a0 We decided to focus on this fact in the implementation phase of our action project.<\/p>\n
Because our research demonstrated that financial literacy education was an underlying determinate of future economic success we decided that our efforts would be best put to use running a fundraiser for an organization dedicated to spreading financial literacy education within the DMV area.\u00a0 We formed a partnering relationship with the Society for Financial Education and Professional Development, an established organization founded in DC that provides financial education seminars to historically black colleges and universities within the United States.<\/p>\n
For our fundraising, we used a social media campaign in which we created Instagram and Facebook infographics that we shared out with our peers.\u00a0 We used this social media campaign to explain the importance of financial education within the issue of economic inequality, as well as collect funds from those around us.<\/p>\n
By the end of our campaign, we were able to raise $684, far above the goal of $500 that we had set for ourselves at the beginning of the semester, and will be ending our campaign with a seminar provided to AU by the SFE&PD.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Unfortunately, throughout the implementation process of my project, the team dynamic was often strained and difficult to work within.\u00a0 While all of the people were individually wonderful, there was tension created by differing beliefs which created a lack of full trust between the team members.\u00a0 This lack of trust at times resulted in an issue with sharing input and overall team buy-in.\u00a0 Everyone worked fantastically throughout the project, but at times it felt like the team was divided into factions, and that we had a hard time coming together and working as a true team.\u00a0 There was never any conflict within the group and we all maintained civility, but it often felt that conversation and collaboration were strained.\u00a0 Despite these obstacles, however, we were able to push towards the fundraising goal that we had set at the beginning of the project, and ultimately fundraise more than we had even hoped.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

During my time at American University, I have evolved tremendously as a leader.\u00a0 I am in my nature a relatively shy person which makes leading and directing others something that I have had to work at.\u00a0 When I first came to American University my leadership style often involved letting team members take the reigns and be in charge of themselves, for the most part, only reacting when one of my team members needed help.\u00a0 This was easiest for me as it didn’t push me out of my comfort zone.\u00a0 However, at the same time, it made my leadership less efficient as I was responding to issues as they arose rather than making goals and tasks clear from the beginning.<\/p>\n
During the past two semesters, I have learned that I can lead much better, and more efficiently when I am a proactive leader and set clear goals and expectations, in the beginning, that way I don’t have to respond to issues along the way.\u00a0 By being a proactive leader I’ve learned to demonstrate my needs from others, and here clear feedback from the beginning that way the team can work more efficiently later on.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
