Facebook.” The Mayflower Hotel, Autograph Collection,  www.facebook.com/themayflowerhoteldc.

This selected source is the Mayflower Hotel’s Facebook account. The Mayflower Hotel’s Facebook account offers its viewers to see a variety of events, pictures, and articles that the Mayflower Hotel takes part in. On the hotels site, they host the #StayDC which strives to create a connection between the hotel and the DC community . This site also offers a very brief history of the hotel starting from 1925 to 1994. Also, the hotels Facebook site contains several videos to promote different features of the hotel and the different events that occur in DC such as the Cherry Blossom festival.

This source is very helpful to my argument. This source provides me with several examples of how the hotel still strives to be part of the cosmopolitan environment and culture surrounding the hotel. In addition, this site has a brief timeline of their history, which strengthens my arguments that the hotel is proud of their history because the hotel has an exhibit for  its history and now has a small timeline on their social media.

Historic Hotels Washington DC Hotels l The Mayflower Hotel.” Mayflower, www.themayflowerhotel.com/.

This online source offers a description of the hundreds of rooms at the hotel, a variety of locations to visit in DC such as the Verizon Center. This source also offers the different options for the different kinds of venues at the hotel such as rooms for weddings and meets. This source also provides its viewers with a detailed and organized timeline of the Mayflower Hotel starting for 1925 up until today. This timeline also provides images of different grand events that occurred throughout the hotels history such as the first Inaugural Ball.

This source is helpful to my argument because the layout of The Mayflower Hotel’s website is catered of a specific type of audience. Also, the high definition pictures and elegant detailing of the hotels website sets the tone for the entire embellishment. Moreover, the pictures that are displayed on the website provide a sense of who is the audience that the hotel is catering to.

Kershaw, Sarah, and Michael Powell. “Just a Hotel? For Some, It’s an Adventure.” The New York Times, The New York Times, 2008, www.nytimes.com/2008/03/20/fashion/20hotel.html.

In this New York Times article, Powell and Kershaw argued that the Mayflower Hotel is more than what meets the eye. From an outsider perspective, the hotel is viewed as what is known as “The second-best address”, but from an insider’s perspective this hotel is known as a “gentlemen’s hotel” and a place where prostitution is very prominent. Despite the Mayflower Hotel’s numerous amenities and well-designed interior, the hotel has a dark and hidden history of several politicians committing infidelity or substance abuse. This dark history is hidden from outsiders because people who work out the hotel follow the “don’t ask don’t tell” policy.

This source is essential for my argument. My argument is unpacking and exposing the real story behind this hotel and how it connects back to the surrounding area of the hotel. As a result of interior, exterior, and digital structure of the Mayflower Hotel being eye-catching and graceful to the public, all these horrible scandals are overlooked and forgotten. This is the case in the surrounding area of the hotel, for instance, the White House. A prime  example of the case that I have explained is FDR’s caretaker and FDR had an affair but was covered up because FDR was looked upon as a great leader.

McClinsey, Keith. Washington D.C.’s Mayflower Hotel. Charleston, SC, Arcadia Pub., 2007.

The purpose of this book is to provide a detailed timeline of events that occurred in the Mayflower Hotel from the time of its inception in 1925, until 2006. This book covers the basic history and important events from the hotel. Also, this book discusses the Farragut North neighborhood surrounding the Mayflower Hotel during the late 19th century in detail. The author outlines how the city surrounding the hotel developed over time to a metropolitan area with a metro stop.

This source is helpful to my research because it provides a detailed description of how the city surrounding the hotel has evolved from the 19th century to the high-profile area it is today. Also, this historic source is useful because it emphasizes the hotels prime location in Washington, DC which is helpful to my argument. Because of the hotels location, it became a political hub for high profile politicians and presidents such as Calvin Coolidge and Harry Truman.

Paschall, Valerie. “A History of Scandal and D.C. Hotels.” Curbed DC, 2013, dc.curbed.com/2013/6/26/10226580/a-history-of-scandal-and-dc-hotels.

In this website source, the main topics of this article are exposing all the hidden scandals of prominent politicians that occurred in several DC hotels. For example, a scandal that occurred in the Mayflower Hotel was President Bill Clinton having an affair with Monica Lewinsky. This is a well-known fact but very few people know that Monica was staying at the Mayflower Hotel will this event occurred. Another scandal was Mayor Marion Barry was issued a crack possession charge at the Mayflower Hotel. Lastly, one of the most well-known was Eliot Spitzer one night affair with a prostitute that occurred at the Mayflower Hotel.

This source is helpful to shaping my research because it provides further evidence for the main argument in my essay. The main argument is that the Mayflower Hotel covers up its scandals through it elegant and grand interior and exterior building which the building is known for. But little do people know the dark history behind the Mayflower Hotel.

This article discusses the modern-day purpose of the hotel and the types of customers that visit it. The article also serves the purpose of informing the audience about what will occur at the Mayflower hotel during this year’s presidential election. Also, the article explains that because of the close proximity of the hotel to the White House the environment of the hotel changes during the election period.

This source is helpful to my research because it is very current and the author shares the events that will occur in the hotel in real time rather than reflecting back to the history of the hotel. Furthermore, the author describes the daily atmosphere of the hotel when elections and other political events happen.

Roberts, Robin. “The President’s Hotel.” Saturday Evening Post 258.1 (1986): 92-93. Academic Search Alumni Edition. Web. 9 Dec. 2016.

The author begins the article by presenting a viewpoint that the Mayflower hotel is usually overlooked in DC’s history. The article goes on to discuss how the hotel is important to the DC society throughout the years. It also examines how the hotel has been renovated over the years to keep up with the times and provide an elegant atmosphere to their clientele. Then the author introduces different events involving famous people such as Franklin Roosevelt and J. Edgar Hoover that have occurred in the hotel.

This source is helpful to my research because it offers a new perspective to this hotel. The history and events that occur in this hotel are so underrated and overlooked by the general public which helps support my argument. This source reminds me of Rice’s article about how everyday objects can have hidden meanings. The general public does not see how this hotel has multiple networks that connect to each other and how the general public is part of these networks.

Tom. “Three Bits of Trivia About the Mayflower Hotel – Ghosts of DC.” Ghosts of DC, 16 Feb. 2015, ghostsofdc.org/2013/07/08/three-bits-of-trivia-about-the-mayflower-hotel/.

The main point of this article are three aspects. Firstly, the author mentions FDR staying at the Mayflower Hotel writing his famous “Nothing to Fear” inaugural speech the night before. Secondly, the author alludes to two scandal’s that were committed in the Mayflower Hotel. The author also brought to the reader’s attention, the picture of Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky hugging during one of Bill Clinton’s campaign events. Lastly, the author references back to the creator of the hotel, Allen E. Walker and how the Mayflower Hotel received its name.

This article is beneficial to my research and shapes my argument. This source furthers the argument that the Mayflower Hotel has a deeply rooted history, whether it be a bad and good part of United States history. This hotel plays an important role in the way United States history turns out.
