    Join us for one of eight sessions where faculty will discuss the process of integrating AU Signature Skills into their course assignments and classroom activities. Panelists will present example assignments and activities that can be used to support the development of AU signature skills in first-year Core classes.<\/p>\n

    Presenters will model and share assignments for potential use in Complex Problems and Encounter AU, with an emphasis on Signature Skills of Communication, Curiosity, Collaboration & Community. Krisztina Domjan will present how to preserve the learning process: evidence gathering, communication, collaboration, reflection, and responsible AI engagement, while tailoring the content and deliverables to one\u2019s own course objectives. Derrick Cogburn will present four examples of how to implement the 4Cs to align selected Signature Skills with Complex Problems learning objectives. Moya Malcolm will present a values clarification survey and peer advising & accountability group model that foster students’ self-awareness, sense of belonging, and collaboration skills. Emily Peterson will present sample in-class activities and assignments that seek to leverage social connection and social contagion to support curiosity. Participants will have the opportunity to brainstorm ideas with presenters and fellow participants for use in their own classes.<\/p>\n

    The AU Signature Skills<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0were developed by a group of AU faculty and staff this spring to operationalize AU\u2019s goal to help students develop into thoughtful and engaged professionals, and are an extension of AU’s Meet Our Moment<\/em> Strategic Plan.<\/p>\n

    Learning Outcomes:<\/strong><\/p>\n

      “If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?\u201d Sometimes teaching can feel like this age-old riddle: we work to create assignments that we hope will help students obtain real-world skills, but at the end of the semester, they don\u2019t seem to have connected the dots. We walk away scratching our heads, wondering what exactly we were providing students to begin with; in other words, we start to question whether the tree ever really fell, since no one seemed to hear it!<\/p>\n

      Join us for an interactive session demonstrating how easy it can be to integrate AU Signature Skills into your course assignments and classroom activities in ways that students can readily recognize and understand. We\u2019ll begin the session describing how we learned to uncover and give prominence to skills we already were teaching — but that maybe were not being \u201cheard fall\u201d by the students. With additional intentionality, we\u2019ve revised our syllabi, labs, and\/or class assignments to help students better connect these activities to the signature skills AU has committed to helping them build. We\u2019ve also become more explicit about explaining why those skills are professionally important now. In this session, we will describe adjustments we\u2019re incorporating this fall into assignments\/class activities across a range of disciplines. You\u2019ll leave with a page of the tips we developed doing this work.<\/p>\n

      “Join us for one of eight sessions where faculty discuss the process of integrating AU Signature Skills into their course assignments and classroom activities. Faculty panelists will discuss ways to spark a sense of curiosity and intellectual purpose in students to foster durable skills.<\/p>\n

      Sarah Iverson\u2019s projects focus on 1) developing lifelong curiosity and ethos of inquiry though an in-class group activity asking students to apply abstract theory to real-world cases without a \u201ccorrect\u201d answer, 2) practicing the critical use of evidence and sources by developing scaffolding assignments to support a semester-long independent research project, and 3) fostering principled disagreement and seeking common ground through student message board debates on complex contemporary issues.<\/p>\n

      Brenda Chow\u2019s projects utilize laboratory research to enrich 1) dependability, trust, teamwork and collaboration by performing experiments; 2) critical use of evidence and sources by communicating scientific discoveries in the written format; and 3) deep reflectiveness and self-direction by peer review and iterative writing.<\/p>\n

      David Vazquez\u2019s projects map Deep Reflectiveness and Self-Direction onto a Creative Assignment that is designed as one of the culminating activities in the course. The Creative Assignment asks students to create an art object (e.g., a short story, visual art, a podcast, or a short film) that grapples with key ideas in the course. The assignment seeks to route key ideas and concepts through different neural pathways in the brain. He also revamped his labor-based grading rubric to explicitly link the grading policy to Deep Reflectiveness and Self-Direction, Principled Disagreement and Seeking Common Ground, and Lifelong Curiosity and the Ethos of Inquiry.<\/p>\n

      Aaron Boesenecker\u2019s projects address three AU Signature Skills in the context of an Advanced International Studies Research course: Critical Use of Evidence and Sources, Effective Communication in Writing, Speech, and other Modes, and Lifelong Curiosity and Ethos of Inquiry. A revised low-stakes writing and peer-commenting exercise early in the semester guides students through an initial examination and evaluation of primary source material suitable for their research projects. A mid-semester low-stakes writing and peer-commenting exercise provides an opportunity for students to generate analytical data visualizations and interpret these results in writing. The final, comprehensive assignment brings together the three Signature Skills in a final research project and seeks to empower students to continue their research beyond the classroom through future presentation and publication opportunities.<\/p>\n

      AU\u2019s commitments to learning by doing is deeply interwoven into courses across disciplines and unites. Within this learning space, please come and explore with faculty colleagues their distinct approaches to incorporating experiential learing within syllabus design, course design, course assignments, and in class activities. This will be an opportunity for four faculty to showcase how they uniquely embed experiential learning in various disciplines and approaches. Additionally, we will provide workshopping time for faculty to consider how to enhance or augment experiential learning within upcoming courses, while sharing access to AU\u2019s resources and connections in the experiential learning space.<\/p>\n

        Come hear from five faculty members who have been engaging in planning all summer to embed the AU Signature Skills within their courses, across the AU Core, AU Encounters, the Baker School of Education, and with a focus on national and global communities. Within the session, we will engage in a short moderated set of lightning talks, where each faculty member will share their process and lessons learned, as they have aligned their courses and assignments to the following AU Signature Skills: Deep Reflectiveness & Self Direction; Civic Engagement; & Principled Disagreement and Seeking Common Ground. Following the lightning talks, each faculty member will set up a station around the room to share more about their planning and assignments. There will be opportunity to look at artifacts from the courses and to engage in smaller group dialogue. To conclude the session, we will have time for some large group questions and planning.<\/p>\n

        The AU Signature Skills<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0 were developed by a group of AU faculty and staff this spring to operationalize AU\u2019s goal to help students develop into thoughtful and engaged professionals, and are an extension of AU’s Meet Our Moment<\/em> Strategic Plan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
