Who’s Eating the Neighborhood? A Deep Dive into Dupont’s Fast Casual Dining

The PNC Bank building in Dupont Circle and its three tenants. Photo by author.

Fast casual is the new hot trend in dining- a fusion of fast food speeds and casual dining quality, it seems flawless. Until recently, with the rise of Chipotle and its contemporaries, it looked to be the new hegemony. However, I feel the need to question these places on account of not only their ubiquity but their also their fundamental artificiality- no matter their ethos, they are fundamentally capitalistic ventures. In response to this, and the challenge of rhetorically analyzing BGR: The Burger Joint, I decided to analyze a small strip of Dupont Circle to try and get at the heart of exactly what makes it tick.
