Position and audience

For my essay 3 I want to focus on how grass root power action like held march will effect the public awareness of climate change issue. In the very beginning of this semester, the video we watched about Greta Thunberg criticized EU leaders for not taking the threat posed by climate change seriously enough. That is my first time to think about the climate change issue.By the following of this semester, doing research about how public and government are reacting to this emergent issue, that make me keep curious about is there any reliable way for us to protect our environment.Like John Oliver mentioned in his episode, many politicians gave their misconception of GND and actually the GND is unrealistic to some extend. There are a lot of march held by different organizations suddenly jump up at the same time to criticized the action taken by government.Meanwhile,as the BBC news posted  the extreme action taken in UK,to awake the public awareness of climate change issue by marching in the biggest meat market in UK and come up with the idea of changing people’s diet way to vegan may be a solution to save our environment. There are some activists like Thunberg who is really brings up some realistic thoughts about the climate change issue, but some activists are doing things from the good start, somehow the speech they delivery to the public may not be a credible solution to follow.

1 body paragraph

John Oliver-a comedian, political commentator, tackled the Green New Deal and carbon pricing on his HBO series Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.Bringing further attention to climate issues and ideas, and reacting a number of arguments in the process. In the “Green New Deal,” Oliver talked about the true meaning of the resolution, rather than distorting the resolution by how republican politicians and critics seized what was not reflected in the resolution itself. As Oliver said, “The Green New Deal doesn’t even mention ‘cows’ or’airplanes’.”By bringing the clips about how those republican politicians said about GND, John Oliver used pathos and ironic way to show how ridiculous those politicians are.The segment also gets to the heart of the GND’s purpose — kickstarting a larger conversation on climate issues and energy transition, and setting aggressive targets. As Oliver says,“It’s important to note the Green New Deal contains no detailed specifics on how it will achieve any of its goals, which sounds like a criticism, but it is really not.”Later, Oliver focused on carbon pricing, which is about half of the 19-minute period show. Through statistics and research results, Oliver pointed out that the idea of carbon pricing is not extreme because it has been widely supported by economists, and governments in more than 40 countries around the world have adopted a carbon pricing strategy.

2.“NYC Students Walk Out Of Class To Protest Climate Change.”YouTube, uploaded by ABC News,20 September 2019.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJxgPdDhKWY

The audiences of this video basically is the YouTube users and subscriber of ABC channel. The video is about the climate change march held in NYC by students. The march is inspired by Greta Thuneberg after giving her speech.Base on the information this video is including, the intended audiences might probably also be those interested in  marches about climate change and the public who want to keep up with the influences Thuneberg gave.

Are they too extreme?

On October 8th, Animal Rebellion held a protest at the Smithfield Market in London. Smithfield Market is largest wholesale meat market in UK and obviously the protesters target is the “meat food system” ,calling for the UK to transition to a Vegan diet. The group claims that 70% of farmland is used in animal farming, which is the main cause of deforestation, loss of biodiversity and water pollution. These are indeed the disadvantages that lead to climate change. At the same time, according to the research, agriculture accounts for only 9% of total greenhouse gas emissions. In the article, the spokesman for Animal Rebellion-Alex Lockwood also pointed out that changing the food system is not just a place that the British government should look at when they solve the climate change issue, but also consider those farmers who are struggling to keep their income in the livestock industry. The group is demanding “an end to the industries of animal agriculture and fishing” and to transition the UK to “a sustainable and just plant-based food system by 2025”.

From my point of view, these activists have indeed made their own contribution to the environmental protection .They made people noticed the pollution of livestock industry that is rarely of concern. However,is it too extreme for them to change the human diet just because the meat food system causes pollution? We should be sensible in the face of environmental protection issues.
