Title: Indonesia’s 2023 ASEAN Chairmanship

Description: The off-the-record symposium examined Indonesia’s role as the ASEAN Chair in 2023, and focused on regional security, economic, and social issues. Speakers include Chargé d’affaires Sade Bimantara, Deputy Assistant Secretary Melissa Brown, Murray Hiebert (BowerGroupAsia), Alysha Bedig (Department of State), Andreyka Natalegawa (CSIS), Marc Mealy (US-ASEAN Business Council), John Brandon (The Asia Foundation), and Dr. Pek Koon Heng (American University).

Title: A Book Talk on ‘Tragic Nation Burma: Why and How Democracy Failed

Description: A talk co-hosted by the ASEAN Studies Initiative and the East-West Center, moderated by EWC Vice President Satu Limaye, featuring Dr. Amitav Acharya, Ambassador Piper Campbell, Soe Myint, and John J. Brandon. They discussed the situation in Myanmar, ASEAN’s response to the military coup, and the future of the country.

Event Title: APEC and the Emerging Indo-Pacific Architecture: A Conversation with American University

Date: September 12, 2023

US Ambassador to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Matt Murray and Dr. Amitav Acharya held a fireside chat to discuss the role of APEC, the US Host Year, and how the US is finding synergy between economic cooperation and security concerns throughout the Asia-Pacific region.  Ambassador Murray talked about how APEC is working to meet their priorities of creating a resilient and sustainable future for all this year.

Following the discussion, students had the opportunity to network with members of the State Department staff working on these issues, professionals in the field, and were given advice on how to pursue a career at the intersection of economics and security in the US and Asia-Pacific region.

ASEAN Studies Initiative Shared Potluck!

On October 7th, 2022, from 11 AM to 3 PM, we will be in SIS-335 (The GGPS-USFP-CRS-IAPA Lounge) hosting a shared buffer and food type event for all ASEAN Studies Initiative students to attend! We’re inviting all ASI affiliated students to come, share food, and get to meet each other in further detail. Attached below is our sign up sheet, where you will list what you’re bringing, any dietary restrictions, and the standard student identification inquiries.
