In April 2025, AIPSI had the distinct honor of engaging with Malaysia’s Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry, YB Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, during his official visit to Washington, D.C. The meeting took place at the Embassy of Malaysia and provided a rare opportunity for meaningful dialogue on some of the most pressing economic and geopolitical issues facing the region today.
During the conversation, we discussed Malaysia’s strategic responses to the recent imposition of tariffs by the United States and explored how the country is navigating the complex dynamics of U.S.–China competition.
Minister Zafrul shared valuable insights into Malaysia’s approach as a middle power—balancing economic pragmatism with principled engagement in multilateral forums such as ASEAN, APEC, and the WTO. The conversation also touched on Malaysia’s interest in expanding RCEP membership and deepening regional economic integration.
This engagement exemplifies AIPSI’s mission to bridge academic inquiry with real-world policymaking by providing students with first-handexposure to high-level regional actors. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to learn directly from Minister Zafrul and the Malaysian delegation, and we look forward to continuing to foster such exchanges that enrich the understanding of Southeast Asia’s evolving global role.
