The meeting took place at the Embassy of Malaysia and provided a rare opportunity for meaningful dialogue on some of the most pressing economic and geopolitical issues facing the region today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the conversation, we discussed Malaysia\u2019s strategic responses to the recent imposition of tariffs by the United States and explored how the country is navigating the complex dynamics of U.S.\u2013China competition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister Zafrul shared valuable insights into Malaysia\u2019s approach as a middle power\u2014balancing economic pragmatism with principled engagement in multilateral forums such as ASEAN, APEC, and the WTO. The conversation also touched on Malaysia\u2019s interest in expanding RCEP membership and deepening regional economic integration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This engagement exemplifies AIPSI\u2019s mission to bridge academic inquiry with real-world policymaking by providing students with first-handexposure to high-level regional actors. Kyle received his Bachelor\u2019s in Diplomacy and International Relations from the Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kyle has extensive experience in the executive branch of government having served in three government agencies (the Department of Labor, the Department of Trade, and the Department of Tourism) with his most recent role as the Executive Assistant to the Philippine Secretary of Tourism. He was a Program Intern for the Pacific Forum CSIS in Honolulu, Hawai\u2019i in 2017 and is a member of the Young Leaders Program. In Washington, D.C., he was an International Trade Intern at the Asia Society Policy Institute in Summer 2023 and a Young Leaders Program participant at the East-West Center Washington in Spring 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kyle\u2019s interests include maritime security, international trade and economics, international education, and international organizations. Piper Campbell, Director"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"mailto:pipercamp@american.edu\">Ambassador Piper Campbell<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>is the Director of the ASEAN Studies Initiative and a Hurst Sr Professor at American University\u2019s School of International Service, serving as administrative director for the <em>Global Governance, Politics and Security<\/em> program, as well as the <em>United States Foreign Policy<\/em> program. Ambassador Campbell has previously taught at the National Defense University&#8217;s National War College.<\/p>\n<p>Ambassador Campbell&#8217;s areas of expertise include East Asia and navigating multilateral organizations. These two specialties combined when she had the opportunity to lead the U.S. Mission to ASEAN based in Jakarta from June \u2013 December 2018. In that capacity, she served as \u201cSenior Official\u201d in formal sessions of the East Asia Summit, ASEAN regional Forum and the Lower Mekong Initiative. Leading a multi-agency team involved wide-ranging activities from securing agreement with ASEAN Defense Ministers on holding the first U.S.-ASEAN military exercise to opening a summit of Young South East Asian entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, Ambassador Campbell served as Chief of Mission, U.S. Embassy Ulaanbaatar from 2012-2015, in which capacity she supported negotiations on the development of Mongolia\u2019s extractive industries and agreement on a $350 million U.S.-Mongolia Millennium Challenge Compact.
