I am an incoming freshman interested in sailing, how do I join?<\/span><\/p>

Once the Fall semester begins we will have an interest meeting and other events to get to know the team. In the meantime you can follow us on Instagram @auclubsailing for updates as well as join our mailing list\u00a0<\/span>using this<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>interest form<\/a>. If you have any questions or want to know more about the program feel free to send us an email, we’d love to chat!<\/span><\/p>

How do I register for the club?<\/strong><\/p>

Visit the\u00a0DoSportsEasy<\/a>\u00a0portal, scroll down to Sailing and click “Registration”, then fill out the required information. If you are 18+ and have a license, please register as a driver so the club can offer enough programming for everyone. Registration is required by\u00a0Oct.<\/b>\u00a015th\u00a0<\/strong>for the fall and\u00a0Feb. 15th\u00a0<\/b>for the spring. This is a hard deadline and cannot be adjusted. You will not be able to participate in club activities if you are not registered after this date.<\/span><\/p>

Where do you sail?<\/strong><\/p>

We sail out of the Washington Sailing Marina. We either sail in the Lagoon adjacent to the Marina or on the Potomac River by Reagan National Airport. The location depends on the weather.<\/p>

The official address is: 1 Marina Dr, Alexandria, VA 22314<\/p>

What time are practices?<\/strong><\/p>

This semester (Fall 2024) are schedule is still tentative. Our social practices are expected to be 8 a.m.-11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays! Our racing practices are\u00a0 expected to be Tuesday & Thursdays from 2:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Regular attendance is not required to be a part of the team, however may be required for those attending upcoming regattas. Depending on sailor and officer availability, we may add additional practices to accommodate those who can’t attend. All practices are subject to change based on the weather and available daylight.<\/p>

You must RSVP to attend a practice. We only have so many boats, so many sailors, and so little time. Our weekly emails will contain links to RSVP.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>

What should I bring to practice?<\/strong><\/p>

Please bring shoes that can get wet, some type of work or sailing gloves, a PFD\/lifejacket, sunscreen a dry change of clothes, and water. Please do not wear jeans (and avoid cotton if you can), and instead opt for athletic\/quick-dry, synthetic, fleece, or wool options.<\/p>

If you do not have gear such as lifejackets or gloves, we have many extras you can borrow.<\/p>

How much are dues?<\/strong><\/p>

Tentative dues for Social Sailors are $100 per semester. Dues for Racing Sailors are $200 per semester. Dues\u00a0must be given to our Treasurer in either cash or check.\u00a0If you are paying by check please make it out to “American University”<\/u>. Dues are due by Oct. 15th<\/b>\u00a0this fall.\u00a0<\/p>

Our\u00a0dues\u00a0go towards transportation, marina fees, boat maintenance, and development of the club. For racers, the additional\u00a0dues\u00a0goes towards regatta fees, hotels, and regatta transportation.\u00a0If you are unable to pay or need some form of assistance, we are happy to work with you. Dues are subject to change as we gauge expected membership numbers and the costs associated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

What are the requirements for members?<\/strong><\/p>

In order to be a fully participating member you need to pay your dues and register on DoSportsEasy. If you are missing any of these requirements you will be prohibited from participating in club activities.<\/p>

How do I get club emails?<\/strong><\/p>

You can join the mailing list using this\u00a0interest form<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>

Where can I find the Constitution? How do I let you know I read it?<\/strong><\/p>

Once you are registered and fully committed to joining the team, please read through the Club’s Constitution for official policies and rules. The Constitution is attached and linked HERE<\/a>. <\/span>Please confirm you have read through the Constitution\u00a0by filling out the form\u00a0HERE<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>

Am I guaranteed a spot at a regatta if I pay racing dues?<\/b><\/p>

No. While we try to make it fair for all racers, we typically take members who are regularly involved with the team – those who enhance the culture and community of the team.
