Ben Holtzman is a sophomore and Olson Scholar at American University pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in both International Studies and Economics. As part of the Olson Scholars program Ben plans to investigate the relationship between Hamas and the Palestinian Authority, specifically Fatah, and how that relationship affects the prospects for peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
At American University Ben currently serves as the Student Trustee-elect on the Board of Trustees and will assume the role of Student Trustee during the 2020-2021 academic year. Outside of school, Ben serves as the Director of Federal Affairs at March For Our Lives DC, advocating for sensible gun laws as well as funding for violence intervention programs. Originally from Los Angeles, Ben was elected as the 2017-2018 Student Member for the Board at LAUSD representing 664,000 students across the district. On the Board, Ben supported policies that improved work place conditions for victims of sexual abuse, and promoted more diverse representation in mentorship of students. To connect his D.C. experience to his hometown, Ben served as an intern in the Office of Congresswoman Karen Bass, focusing his efforts in research involving African affairs and women in the criminal justice system.
