Welcome! My name is Brittney Revan. I am a senior in the School of Public Affairs at American University pursuing a B.A. in Political Science and a Masters in Public Administration as part of the BA/MPA combined program. Currently, I am in the School of Public Affairs Honors Program, a mentor at SisterSister AU, the Deputy Director of Programming & Outreach at the Community Service Coalition in AU Student Government, and an intern in the Bureau of International Organization Affairs Office of Peacekeeping Operations in the U.S. Department of State.
As a political science major, I gravitated towards courses centered around American Politics, Politics of Congress, and Political Thought and have developed a deep understanding of our government and its functions. Additionally, my course load laid the foundations for my interest in being a change agent in my community. I have conducted several research projects as part of my leadership certificate program in collaboration with Professors Paul Manuel and Calvin Haney at American University. My partners and I were able to team up with Life Pieces to Masterpieces and raise over $250 to assist them in their efforts to fill the achievement gap and provide a community for young African American boys and men from underserved neighborhoods in Washington, DC.
Unfortunately, we live in a society where approximately 1 in 3 black men can expect to go to prison in their lifetime. We live in a society where the states have the power to decide the content of their history textbooks. These things lead to racially charged teachings, the omission of facts, and the glorification of tragic historical periods – such as slavery. Education is a right, not a privilege. Racism runs rampant in our structures, systems, and institutions; the reformation of these conditions is what drives me daily. I aspire to get into the public policy field; I hope to stimulate changes in mass incarceration, education, and immigration reform. I am a proactive student with superior skills in communication, leadership, and adaptability. I have proven exposure to diverse fields, the ability to work under deadlines, manage multiple projects at once, and maintain professionalism. I am eager to strengthen my skills, develop new capabilities, and enhance my professional experiences.
Being raised in Miami, Florida, has taught me one thing: the importance of stepping out of my bubble. As I grow up, I realize how short life is and how vital it is to explore the world around me. My parents raised me to value this type of experience and instilled in me the idea that “you can get your money back, but you will never get your time back.” I am a first-generation college student raised in a household with five siblings. I have been fortunate enough to travel outside the country a few times on school-sponsored trips and personal vacations. Beyond traveling, I have taken part in various extracurricular activities, including swimming, gymnastics, track and field, yoga, crocheting, and painting.
