Education in the Past vs. Opinions of Today
Fleming Quote: [A]n education [. . .] that was designed to support a truly direct, deliberative democracy [. . .] would be an education oriented to the ‘strong publics’ of decision-making rather than the ‘weak publics’ of opinion formation. (205)
By definition, a deliberative democracy is “a form of democracy in which deliberation is central to decision-making” (Dictionary), therefore Fleming would be correct in saying that an education with that design would emphasize decision making rather than opinions. Fleming is trying to explain that this form of democracy is often applied to our form of education today. However, I would argue Fleming’s point and say that today, our education system is based on opinions rather than decision making. Assignments for many classes in the past have been very structured in which the teacher makes all of the decisions on what structure the assignment will be. However, I believe innovations have been made in our education system to make our papers more open and based on our individual opinions. Historically, education was thought to be extremely structured and have only one right answer in which the teacher was to never be challenged. This has since been changed to embrace the new generation’s opinions and variety of thought.
