“And the seasons, they go round and round,
And the painted ponies go up and down.
We’re captive on the carousel of time.
We can’t return, we can only look
Behind from where we came,
And go round and round and round in the circle game.”
Song by: Tom Rush, “The Circle Game”

I first heard this song at sleep-away camp when I was 10 years old. We always sang this song at our closing campfire and I always cried because that was when it was time to say goodbye to all of our friends and to the summer. However, it never truly hit me what the words I was singing meant until I was older. It is still one of my favorite songs, because it puts life in perspective. The song lyrics truly speak to me because I always talk about how quickly life and time goes by, and how I wish we could put a stop to it. However this song allows me to see how life just continues on and on, and we truly can only look back on the memories. Our memories are the only things we have to hold on to about the past, it cannot be relived. Though it is kind of saddening, it also brings light to my perspective, because it shows me the importance of truly living in the present and not dwelling on the past, because then you will miss the moments happening around you every day.
