In Front of Tiananmen

Sun Zixi (1929-2016), In Front of Tiananmen, oil on canvas, 1964

At the center of the painting, group of people of different age and with different occupations is posing for a group portrait in front of Tiananmen and the portrait of Chairman Mao, an idealized image of a New China—the unity of Chinese people under Mao. However, this group is not the only people who are taking a group picture in front of Tiananmen. On the right side, a group of six young navy soldiers is also getting ready for a picture. And on the left side, there is a group of ethnic minorities. The group, all dressing in their traditional costumes, represents the different ethnic minorities in China and their close interactions echo with the China’s political slogan “All ethnicities are brothers and sisters,” and the group is depicted as the perfect example of “one big family of Chinese people.”
