Directors: Te Wei (1915-2010), Shen Zuwei

Animator: Zhou Dazheng (1941-)

Produced by Shanghai Animation Film Studio during the Cultural Revolution, the 1976 film The Golden Goose tells a simple story of good versus evil. However, unlike most revolutionary tales during this period, the story of The Golden Goose sets in the post-liberation Tibet. The film tells the story of a revolutionary Tibetan youth who discovered and defeated the old landlord and tribal leader who plotted against the Communist government’s plan to end the locust plague in Tibet. Besides the combat between the hero and the villains, another important conflict in this film the conflict between the old religious traditions and the new revolutionary ideas—the Tibetan Buddhism practiced and promoted by the overthrown upper class is constantly mocked and criticized as the source of suffering and the tool for the tribal lords to control Tibetan people.
