I was scrolling through Pinterest earlier today as I often do and I came across this advertisement for becoming a Lyft driver. First of all, choosing Pinterest I thought was a good choice on Lyft’s part because countless people go onto Pinterest everyday and will scroll through and see this ad. In addition to this, the ad is also dark gray with bright pink and white lettering. Not only does this stand out as a poster, it is extremely hard to miss compared to the other images, at least in my Pinterest feed, which are all fairly light and bright colors.
All of the reasons that Lyft advertises on this image are very appealing, especially to someone who many be looking to find or pick up another job. For starters, beginning a job and being given a $500 bonus right out of the gate is something that many people would be very excited to hear. This is a strong point of advertisement for Lyft because this will incentivise people to apply to be a driver so that they can make money immediately. Being able to keep 100% of the money that is made from tips is also something that many people appreciate because it means that the are going to be making more money than just the base fairs for each ride. However, this is also good for lyft because the drivers will try to be nicer to get higher tips, and thus Lyft as a company will get a better reputation for having good drivers.
Choosing the days and hours that one works is also a great base for advertising because people like to have flexibility in their scheduling. If someone wakes up in the morning and doesn’t want to work that day, they don’t have to if they work for Lyft because they have that freedom of choice. It is also advertised that once the driver’s account reaches $50, they can cash out and get that money. That is nice because if someone needs money on short notice, they could do a few rides and cash out and not have to wait for a payday or wait until they make more money to cash out.
The one thing that I thought wasn’t all good about this ad was the fact that is advertised meeting new “friends”. Not everyone is an extrovert and likes to socialize with people, even when at work. I thought it was clever, though, that Lyft used the word “friend” instead of just “people” because it made it seem as though the people that the drivers would meet would be people that they would talk to and possibly form friendships with. This makes driving seem more appealing because it hints that everyone that requests a ride will be pleasant and nice, when that is definitely not the case.
All in all, I think this is a really good advertisement and if someone was looking for a job and happened upon this ad then they would be crazy not to apply. However, I also think that these five reasons to apply are a little too good to be true, and that there is some sort of trick in the application process that would cause people to think again before they applied to be a driver.
