My name is Claire Mills and I am second year student in the School of International Service at American University, majoring in International Studies and double minoring in Arabic and Environmental Science. At AU, I am a member of the AU Honors program, a program centered around developing interdisciplinary approaches to modern challenges, and the Olson Scholars program, a specialized research curriculum designed for second year students in the School of International Service.
My academic interests include peace building and environmental policy, with a particular focus on Africa and the Middle East. As part of the Olson Scholar’s program, my research will focus on the intersections of these areas. What is the true environmental cost of conflict? How can we build more sustainable military systems which still effectively maintain stability? How can the reduction of the need for military systems serve as environmental policy?
I am excited to explore these questions as I further define my research as an Olson Scholar.
