Earlier this year, the freshman class of the SPA Leadership program spent a weekend in Sharpsburg, Maryland. To expand upon a text we had read analyzing President Lincoln’s leadership style, we took a tour of the Antietam battlefield. This was a powerful experience that allowed me to visualize an important historical event and an example of military leadership. The rest of the retreat consisted of bonding experiences and exercises designed to improve our communication skills. At the end of the retreat, we reflected and named our goals for the year. This provided me with clarity that is hard to come by during the frantic first weeks of college. Overall, this experience brought me closer to my fellow Leadership members and taught me numerous lessons that I took back to campus.
