New Faculty: Basic Information

Getting to Campus

If you are using the Metro, American University offers a free shuttle bus from the Tenleytown Metro station to both main campus and the Washington College of Law daily and on weekends.

If you will drive to campus, AU has several parking lots available to faculty, staff and students. Full-time faculty who drive everyday are encouraged to register their vehicle with the University and obtain a full-time faculty/staff parking permit, that can be paid through convenient pre-tax payroll deductions. Full-time permits are valid in all faculty/staff lots at all times. If you choose to drive to campus, you must display your AU permit 8 am – 5 pm, Monday-Friday. Parking after 5 pm weekdays and on weekends is free. Parking for Adjunct faculty is available free of charge in the Nebraska Commuter Lot and Katzen Garage by displaying a special adjunct permit.

Parking can also be paid for hourly by cash or credit card (MC, VISA or Discover) at convenient Pay-As-You-Go machines located in the Nebraska Commuter lot or Katzen Garage. Pre-paid Nebraska Commuter lot and Katzen Garage permits may also be purchased from Public Safety in daily and weekly increments.

Human Resources

The Office of Human Resources is located at 3201 New Mexico Avenue NW, close to campus. Their phone number is 202-885-2591, and can help with many issues.

Getting connected on campus

To gain access to various services on campus, you’ll need a Faculty ID card.

Using the campus phone system, you can contact other faculty and offices. Set up your voicemail and learn how to make long distance calls.

Technologically, begin with the Office of Information Technology’s (OIT) tips for getting connected. If you need IT assistance to troubleshoot your software, hardware, networking, telecommunications and cable television issues, contact the Help Desk by phone, email or instant message.

Pertinent to Teaching

AU uses a 4 point grading system. A comprehensive online resource for AU’s academic regulations can also be found on the Office of the Registrar’s website.

Students’ grades can be submitted online through the AU portal, myau.american.edu. Confidentiality of students’ academic records must be respected, as regulated by FERPA.
