August Faculty Workshops

Every year before the beginning of the semester, the Center for Teaching, Research, and Learning, in collaboration with the University Library, hosts the May Workshop series, demonstrating new and innovative approaches to classroom teaching and research. Learn more about August Faculty Workshops.

Ann Ferren Conference

This one-day annual conference, held the Friday before spring classes begin, features interactive, faculty-led panel sessions on current and important topics related to teaching, research, and learning. Learn more about Ann Ferren Conference. 

Chalk Talk Series

The CTRL Chalk Talk Series supports focused discussions that are timely and relevant to all faculty at American University. The series, which are 75 minutes long, are designed to be responsive to the needs of faculty: topics can be submitted by as early as two weeks in advance, and the event can be scheduled anytime that best meets the needs of the faculty. Critical Perspectives on Teaching and Learning Series (Other Events)

Part of our job as faculty is to translate our informational materials to students in a way that allows for learning to occur. These sessions will unpack and explore ways that instructors can foster classroom learning environments that allow for the success of a broad range of diverse learners. May Workshops

This year’s program included curriculum-based workshops on topics such as active learning, curriculum design, and grading strategies; instructional technology workshops on topics such as video creation, creating surveys in Qualtrics, and the Blackboard gradebook; a Community-Based Learning institute; two Complex Problems Faculty Fellows Workshops; as well as “Office Hours” hosted by faculty from each of the AU Core’s five Habits of Mind. Noontime Conversations

The Center for Teaching, Research & Learning sponsors two or three conversational lunches per semester focused on topics of special interest to Faculty. Learn more about Noontime Conversations. 

New Faculty Orientation

New Faculty Orientation, held during the week before classes begin, serves as an introduction to the university for new tenure-line faculty and new term faculty. The program includes an overview of the university and students as well as information on teaching and resources to help you get off to a successful start. Learn more about New Faculty Orientation!
