As an undergrad at the University of Hawaii, I thought I was going to become an underwater archaeologist. Then I chased love to Washington, DC (it’s ok, we got married – it all worked out). So there I was, 22 years old, bachelor’s degree in hand, no water or shipwrecks in sight… I just needed a job. As fate would have it, the first job offered to me was at a little nonprofit called the Saylor Academy. They were creating free online university-level courses built with open educational resources (OER). So I figured if I can’t dive on shipwrecks, I might as well become a Saylor (sorry for the dad joke, I have two kids now).

After five years at Saylor, I had directly contributed to the build of 75 or so new courses, including a first-of-its-kind MOOC with NASA that I project managed, and formed partnerships with universities around the world who would award university credit to our students.

Over ten years later, this intersection of innovative instructional design and professional learning pathways has become the staple of my career.

In 2016, I decided to formalize the instructional design skills I learned on the job and get my Master’s in Learning Design & Technology. Since then, I’ve been working for universities in the U.S. and New Zealand, my new home.

At American University (AU), I led projects like EdSpace, a WordPress multisite available to faculty and students for open pedagogy projects like student-run course websites and ePortfolios; Open American, an OER grant program; and a Faculty Online Training Course. I was then hired by AU’s law school to lead their new Office of Online Learning where I defined what online learning would look like, helped launch a new degree program, managed an LMS migration, and led the school-wide transition to online teaching and learning during the coronavirus pandemic.

Of course, I didn’t do any of this alone. I’ve been able to accomplish a lot because people enjoy working me. That, above all, is my greatest strength. Colleagues have described me as trustworthy, reliable, and someone who’s never afraid to roll up his sleeves and figure out a problem collaboratively.

In 2022, my family and I relocated to New Zealand where I currently work at Lincoln University. In my short time here, I’ve continued my work of creating, managing, and teaching professional learning programs, pathways, and certifications for academic staff.

As a potential Director of Online Learning, Head of Professional Learning Pathways, or Senior Instructional Designer role, I bring a collaborative leadership style to any team. I look forward to connecting.

["post-991","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
https://edspace.american.edu/davidrose/competency-8-apply-computer-based-technologies-and-media-to-the-solution-of-instructional-problems/

Competency 8: Apply Computer-Based Technologies and Media to the Solution of Instructional Problems

★ Plans and designs effective learning environments and experiences supported by technology

★ Applies technology to facilitate a variety of effective assessment and evaluation strategies

★ Demonstrates understanding of social, ethical, legal, and human issues surrounding the use of technology and applies it in practice

<div class="flex_column av_one_half flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first " style='border-radius:0px; The design document I created during the analysis and design phase of this project demonstrates my ability to plan and design effective learning environments and experiences. The WordPress platform OER101 is built on shows my ability to take those plans and bring them to life using technology in a way that supports and enhances the design.

Assessment and evaluation in OER101 further shows my ability to apply technology to learning environments. Some assessments were built directly into the WordPress platform, while others were built in Google Forms and then embedded into the course site. Google Forms allowed me to create a user-friendly assessment tool that would provide automatic feedback for learners. Understanding my audience’s needs, I knew that faculty would want to progress through this module quickly, so providing instant feedback was important. Moreover, using embed codes allowed the two technologies to integrate seamlessly, giving users one simple platform. I also took the learning experience a step further by purchasing the domain name OER101.com and then forwarding that address to the real URL OER101 lives on (https://edspace.american.edu/oer101/). Access to learning is important, and a simple URL to direct people to helps to increase access.

My consideration of easy access and user-friendly design shows my commitment to human issues surrounding the use of technology. OER101 also inherently demonstrates an understanding of social, ethical, and legal issues. Open educational resources are fundamentally about social justice and equal access to knowledge. WordPress, an open access software, similarly helps with the free dissemination of knowledge. Both the content and delivery method of my course speak to my commitment to social equality. Moreover, OER combats the ethical issues surrounding rapidly rising textbook prices. With commercial publishers continually trying to confuse students and faculty with practices like co-opting the term “open education” without actually being open, or implementing electronic access codes that limit access to learning materials, OER101 is an attempt to fight back against these ethical perversions.

Finally, the underlying mechanism to open education and open educational resources is legal copyright. A big part of this learning module is teaching faculty about copyright issues and how open licenses aren’t meant to eliminate one’s legal copyright, but add to it and enhance it, by giving the creator the ability to tell downstream users exactly how they’re allowed to use the material they created. My course itself is openly licensed, allowed others to take it and remix it if they want, so long as they attribute me as the original creator. Again, using an open source platform like WordPress allows me to give users that permission as my technology is not proprietary or commercially locked down.

I’m proud of the way OER101 turned out and hope to continually improve and build upon it — or better yet, have others take it and improve it for their purpose and their audience. Learning is sharing, and that’s what this course is all about.

<div class="flex_column av_one_fifth flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding " style='border-radius:0px; Abby is tasked with creating a training for new employees, but the only resources she is given to work with are the current employees who show no desire to train the new employees. No guidebook or training manual exists at FDM either for Abby to work with. Then, convince, or get the plant manager to incentivize if he has to, the current employees to sit down with Abby to 1) Explain what they are doing in the video she recorded, and 2) Answer a few questions on camera about what they’ve learned over the years — “expert tips” or something like that. This way, Abby doesn’t have to convince the retiring operators to train new employees, rather just sit down in the break room and talk about their job for 30-60 minutes. If they’re being paid for their time all the same, it shouldn’t be seen as too onerous for the operators. Perhaps operators perceive this as a slight ego-boost as well — i.e. hearing “you’ve done great work here for 30 years, please tell us how you’ve been able to do such a great job” is something nice to hear. This intervention should help Abby accomplish her goals.

The third sub-competency was met with Project 3: The Evaluation Plan, from EDCI 577. This course, Strategic Assessment and Evaluation, explored principles and techniques that can be used to carry out evaluations within an organization and assessments of individual learners. This project allowed to create an Evaluation Report for a previous project mentioned in Competency 3: my OER101 course. Being able to expand on this project was a really cool aspect of the LDT program for me. In EDCI 627: Instructional Design Project Management, we explored the application of project management ideas, concepts, and strategies in instructional design settings. The first and last assignments for this course asked us to consider the relationship between instructional design and project management, and create a visual representation of how we interpret this dynamic.

Project managers in the instructional design field must constantly practice inclusivity. As my graphic design depicts, communication is a fundamental aspect of managing educational projects. Learning is enhanced when we communicate with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures from our own. Similarly, the reflection also examines how instructional designers may be able to get away with working in a silo in some cases, but a project manager would never, by definition, be isolated from other people. This is akin to the relationship between educational technology and the broader field of education. That is, in order to see the forest and the trees at the same time, we must zoom out, connect with people, and practice good communication skills.

In my work, I have come to understand the importance of great communication skills as well. Without it, projects are doomed to fail.

The final sub-competency was accomplished by an artifact already presented in Competencies 1 & 2: my final paper from EDCI 531: Learning Theory and Instructional Design. I critically evaluated the theory and practice of learning theories like constructivism and situated cognition in my paper, “Virtual Cognitive Apprenticeships to Fill High School to College Knowledge Gap.” The paper not only discusses the theoretical underpinnings of the education practice, but applied it to a proposed solution in the field of transitional education. The paper allowed to think critically and practically about theory — I was able to consider the potential ramifications of adopting an educational viewpoint by playing the situation out.

Working in the field at the same time as being in this program has been a huge benefit to my learning. This latter role allowed me to communicate effectively with my audience in both written and oral format. All the content on the course website was either created or curated by me. Some of the learning materials are visual, some are textual readings, and some are videos I recorded. These different formats show my ability to communicate effectively in oral and written formats.

Different formats of learning materials also demonstrates an understanding of good pedagogy for online learning. I leveraged the medium to communicate with my audience in various ways.

Moreover, my user-friendly design enabled this content to mesh well with sound online learning pedagogy. My learners are guided through the course in a linear fashion, are provided with multiple opportunities for engagement and assessment of knowledge, and are supported with feedback and encouragement in spite of the asynchronous learning environment.

One of the strengths of this course is its brevity. This was a direct response to the learner analysis I conducted which solidified that if university faculty are my target audience, they won’t have much time, nor patience, to complete a long drawn out course that serves no benefit to them other than their own personal enrichment. I adapted the instruction to the unique needs of my diverse audience. The asynchronous nature of the course further allows for a diverse group of participants who may be globally dispersed with various life and work commitments.

["post-888","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET

LDT Competency Portfolio

One of the final tasks in Purdue University’s online Master of Science in Education in Learning Design & Technology (LDT) program is the LDT Portfolio course.

In this course, I developed an electronic competency portfolio that includes artifacts, narratives, and a competency table. This paper is a good example of the sub-competency: “Demonstrates ability to describe common research methods in Educational Technology.” OER research is primarily survey-based, with both qualitative and quantitative results. When affordability is often the first cited reason for OER adoption, what does that mean for more elite institutions who traditionally did not have to worry about the financial security of their students? My paper, “Virtual Cognitive Apprenticeships to Fill High School to College Knowledge Gap,” detailed a developmental and college transition program and connected the research to my rationale for such a program.
