This year I am a member of the Public Health and Policy group which has focused on researching healthcare to the best of our ability. Through extensive research we discovered many of the benefits and drawbacks of the Affordable Care Act. Notably, we found that when we started our research we really didn’t know much about healthcare and most members of our community didn’t know much if anything either. This isn’t trivial information either as knowing what your provider is or what rights you have to care are extremely important for maintaining health. With this in mind we toiled day and night debating and rethinking how we could best benefit our community which needed to know so much about healthcare.

After a long arduous process the Public Health and Policy group came to the conclusion that although we have identified a problem, we didn’t know how bad it was or to what actions needed to be taken to fix it. Naturally, we are going to do some hands on research to remedy this problem. We are conducting a survey of students at our school to inform a policy proposal for American University. Our goal is to collect the data we need to find out what American University should be doing about informing students about healthcare and the rights they have both on campus and across the country.

At American University’s SPA leadership program we take on big problems and see what a few individuals can do to help if they put their minds on it. I bring up science in conversations whenever its applicable, and will often mention whatever study out of Nature or some other journal is currently catching my eye. Despite my inclination for science I am totally uninterested in majoring in science to many peoples’ surprise. My reasoning is fairly simple:

I lack a mind for the minute details and repetitive precision required for a career in science. The lab life working with mice wouldn’t do it for extroverted Ethan Lipka.

Science doesn’t lack good scientists. It lacks good representatives. The main thing science needs is more respect as an institution.

I want to assist science on an institutional scale. I want to help politicians and the public alike see what is so important about science. A lot of the problems we have in the world have solutions based in data if we cared enough to look. If we can get researchers more funding from our tax dollars we could be cure diseases faster and advance our economy through innovative technology.

So, I am majoring in political science, and doing everything I can to get ahead in politics to help science grow. I love to have informational interviews with practically anyone who will sit down with me. I am working right now for the Maryland Democrats for the 2018 midterms so I have a good application to apply for an internship on the hill.

By furthering myself and learning everything I can about politics I hope to someday be able to make a difference in government and serve the American people by serving science.

A question I get a lot is “Why aren’t you a science major?” It doesn’t surprise me that people ask. Trump was incoming, and nothing was definitively off the chopping block. I had a conversation with my congresswomen Anna Eshoo, and I got the feeling she felt her life’s work was about to be destroyed. Yet in all that doom and gloom I had a transformative experience that pushed me towards politics in a way I never would have imagined.

On the sixth of the month I went to Library of Congress (or as the authors of the constitution would put it, “congrefs”). Below the beautifully painted dome, I was read a book that I had been trying to get my hands on for months: the War Diary of Admiral Yi Sun Shin. A Korean war hero, who is considered by many to be the best admiral of all time despite being ignored in most Western history books. I remember reading that old translation and thinking it was the most violent depiction of classical war I have ever read. I knew war was violent, but I always assumed there was some heroism and beauty in pre-nineteenth century warfare. In that library, I learned about war but I also learned something a bit more important.

I realized that this country does care about the truth. While science is under attack from all sides, and facts seem irrelevant to modern politics the Modern day Alexandrian Library stands like the statues of the great thinkers within its walls: steady. It is a symbol of dedication to knowledge, and made me for the first time feel truly patriotic. There are people in our government fighting the good fight for truth. I want to be one of those people. I want to serve America, by serving science in politics.

Having a purpose has driven me. I have been developing myself so as to serve the American people. I am currently interning with the Democratic Party of Maryland to learn more about the political process, and working with AWOL so I can help integrate science into their stories. I aim to improve myself for my quest to serve the world and hope that you (whoever you are that googled me) can help me do that.

In January 2017 most people I met in DC were dejected.
