[{"id":57,"date":"2023-04-05T22:42:18","date_gmt":"2023-04-05T22:42:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/edspace.american.edu\/em1702a\/?page_id=57"},"modified":"2023-04-05T22:42:18","modified_gmt":"2023-04-05T22:42:18","slug":"internship-experience","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/edspace.american.edu\/em1702a\/internship-experience\/","title":{"rendered":"Internship Experience"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In Spring 2023, I served as a press intern in the office of Senator Elizabeth Warren and completed a class within the SPA Leadership program focused on developing transferable professional skills within our internship and preparing to use these experiences to enter the job market. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this role, I compiled daily television and radio clips using TV Eyes and Snapstream, transcribed audio and media appearances using Otter.ai, and wrote and edited original press releases, repurposed press releases, quotes, video scripts, and media advisories. I also researched reporters and developed issue area-specific press lists used to pitch stories on the Senator&#8217;s top priorities. We were able to raise over $200 to contribute to Mozaic which works with Syrian refugees. We also launched a social media campaign that reached over 100 people which we used to inform the public about the strenuous process undertaken by potential refugees to receive refugee status in the US as well as the mental toll that can take given the difficulty of the process and the lack of support resettled refugees are given. Lastly, we created a website with an informative video that was shared with first year AUx classes that also listed action items for viewers to take to learn about current legislation and sign petitions as well as to donate to various refugee support organizations around the country. Ultimately, we were successful in raising awareness and supporting a local organization.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Personal Growth<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As a leader, I have gained many valuable skills and experiences as a result of working with my issue group on a social action project and through the leadership labs that we were able to take part in. My organizational and planning skills have greatly improved as, being a member of a team, I wanted to ensure that I was able to support my teammates by keeping myself on track. I also was able to develop my ability to be assertive and share my ideas for potential issues and projects. I found that I became more confident in my role as a leader as well, and often saw myself volunteering to take on tasks when I may not have in the past. Collaborating with my team certainly helped build these skills because each person was supportive and helpful and willing to lend a hand which fostered a very encouraging environment in which I think all of us were willing to put ourselves out there, take charge, and grow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Team Dynamic<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was extremely proud of my group both during the planning and implementation phase of our project. We worked very cohesively and collaboratively together and were able to successfully create a plan and execute it. Although there were certainly challenges, such as being unable to find a restaurant to hold a fundraiser, we were able to work around it and instead develop other means to raise money, including online social media approaches that could reach a wider audience. At times we did encounter some conflict as we worked to delegate tasks and ensure that the work was being distributed equally but also trying to base it on our individual strengths, which could be difficult. Minster (she\/her) is a member of American University\u2019s Class of 2023 where she is seeking an interdisciplinary degree in Communications, Law, Economics, and Government. She is also pursuing certificates in Community Based Research Certificate and Advanced Leadership Studies. Additionally, she is a member of the Community Based Research Scholars living learning community, an honors program that focuses on working within local communities and emphasizes community based learning through meaningful service and volunteer opportunities, through which she had the opportunity to volunteer with the Central American Resource Center. Within the School of Public Affairs Leadership Program, she was a TA for a group of first-year students, leading them in developing research and a social action project surrounding the ramifications of the politicization of immigration.<\/p>\n<p>Off campus, Emily has experience interning and working with congressional offices, advocacy organizations, and campaign committees at different levels to elect progressive leaders, communicate with different groups and coalitions, and learn about the legislative and political processes. She currently interns for Senator Elizabeth Warren, working on the press team in the office.<\/p>\n<p>Originally from the North Shore of Massachusetts, Emily attended Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School where she was passionate about politics and the law. She served as captain of the mock trial team and led them to their first regional victory, paving way for them to compete at the state competition. She also was a member of the Next Generation League of Women Voters where she worked with the organization to increase civic engagement in the local high school and middle school as well as host informational and educational events for students and adults of all ages.<\/p>\n<p>From an early age, Emily has been passionate about the democratic process and political accessibility, volunteering on her first congressional campaign in 2014 and subsequently working on campaigns and issues that focus specifically on women\u2019s rights and voter engagement.
