This past weekend I was visiting my friend from high school and one night we were really bored and stumbled upon a series of videos on YouTube called “Don’t Hug Me, I’m Scared.” When I first watched it, I didn’t think much of it because the concept didn’t make sense at first glance and simply looked like a poor parody of Sesame Street. Not only did it seem like a bad parody, at some points you think “Oh yeah, this is totally a kids show talking about colors and creativity” until someone’s guts get eaten out by a metal can. Little did I know. It wasn’t until 2 am, six episodes later, and watching a few theory videos, did I begin to recognize the genius behind it. Every single prop in the video has a meaning related to the holistic social statement that is behind the simple puppet show. Each character has a darker side. I will stop here. Don’t want to spoil it too much.
