Faculty Learning Communities (FLC)
Building Culturally Sustaining Classrooms
Recent events on and off-campus have reminded us of the vital importance of developing curricula and pedagogy that recognize and sustain the ways of knowing and lived experiences of students from communities marginalized by systemic inequities.
Our classrooms are not immune from the power dynamics that structure our everyday lives and experiences, regardless of our disciplines or content areas. Rather, they are active sites in which we resist—or reinforce—existing social and racial inequities, and normalize—or problematize—students’ cultural and linguistic practices.
American University’s Center for Teaching, Research & Learning launched the first Faculty Learning Communities (FLC) in the fall of 2017.
Our mission remains the same.
