College Students Suffer from Depression

Mission Statement

We seek to address the problem of stigma surrounding mental health in college students on AU’s campus. Our overall goal is to increase awareness and knowledge of mental health and what resources are available on American University’s campus.

Values

We value our student’s safety and comfort, inclusivity, constructive dialogues, and healthy relationships with themselves and others. Students should be aware of the resources available to them, including counselors on- and off-campus, and should feel comfortable seeking help if they need it.

Our Goals

The goals are outlined below. This campaign will benefit students by offering information on different mental disorders, how to recognize mental in oneself or others, campus resources, and how to manage mental health in positive ways.

Improve knowledge of mental health issues in college students.

Improved knowledge of mental health, its risk factors, signs and symptoms, resources and implications increase people’s resilience and control over their own mental health. It also enhances their ability and self-efficacy in seeking help.

Reduce stigma and barriers to encourage students who need it to seek help.

This can empower people to speak freely about their mental health and make it a common subject. Reducing stigma increases awareness, education and advocacy.

Provide a mental health resource catalog to students.

Being aware of possible resources to help people manage their mental health saves lives, reduces risk of chronic diseases related to stress, anxiety or depression and improves emotional, psychological and social well-being.
