Tips for Healthy Eating

It’s not about individual nutrients anymore

Cut Down on Certain Foods

  • Cut back on foods high in solid fats, added sugars, and salt. This includes cakes, cookies, ice cream, sweetened drinks, pizza, and fatty meats like sausages, bacon, and hot dogs.

Eat These Foods More Often

  • Choose foods that have more nutrients per calories like vegetables and fruits.

Use a Smaller Plate

  • This is a great trick for the all-you-can-eat dining hall at AU! Use smaller plates to help with portion control. By avoiding oversize glasses, and plates, you avoid excess calories.

Go to Class Prepared

  • To avoid the vending machines, pack healthy snacks when you head to class.

Read Nutrition Facts Label

  • Compare sodium, calories, fats, and sugars in your foods

Drink Water

  • Soda, energy drinks, and sugar-sweetened sports drinks are a major source of added sugar and calories. Keep a water bottle with you and fill up from the water fountains across campus.
