About Me

Hello! My name Isobel Araújo and I am a freshman in the Frederick Douglass Distinguished Scholars Program at American University. The Frederick Douglass Distinguished Scholars Program selects five students interested in social justice and building sustainable communities, and supports them financially, professionally, and academically for four years at American University. Scholars gain experience, connections, and inspiration from mentors and staff within the program, and grow as leaders and visionaries for marginalized communities.

I grew up in Chicago, where I started my own not-for-profit project called Message in a Bottle. The project aims to reduce plastic waste by selling stainless steel, reusable water bottles and using the profits to educate the community about the environmental sustainability through a partnership with the Alliance for the Great Lakes.

I am passionate about environmental justice issues the documentation of social injustice, and I plan to pursue Bachelor’s degrees in both Environmental Studies and Film and Media Arts. I also plan to attend graduate school and study urban planning.

In my free time I like to listen to music, go to small music venues, and jam out.
