Extra Points

“Well, I’ve been afraid of changin’

‘Cause I’ve built my life around you

But time makes you bolder

Even children get older

And I’m getting older, too”

The song, “Landside,” by Fleetwood Mac was released in 1975 is an extremely well-known and beautiful song. This song has appeared in many movies, such as Jack Frost in 1998 and Jersey Girl in 2004. I chose the verse above because I believe it is the best and most popular one of the song.  The woman is afraid to change because she has built her whole life around a man.  It seems that the landslide acts as time and she fears that it is slipping away from her.  While time may be going, she is as well.  It seems that throughout the song she is afraid of time running out, which is the possible change in her.  As she grows up, she is afraid of her relationship with him growing in different ways.  It seems as if she fears that they will not love her as she grows and changes, she just wants the security and acceptance of his love.

Office Hour Visit

During my office hour visit with my Professor Hoskins, we took a look at my address for my final project, which is 7th and O street NW and we brain stormed some of the different options that I have for my final project. We talked about the possibility of talking about specific buildings that have been there and how they have changed due to gentrification in Shaw and also the separation that is seen in each side of the O St. Market. We also spent time analyzing the changes I’ve made to my website. It was great to meet with my professor and discuss the things that I can do in my final project.

Visit to the Writing Center

After visiting Professor Hoskins about my plan for revisions for my first essay, I headed to the Writing Center. I finally understood the how to correctly edit my paper because before I was not confident with my writing maybe because English isn’t my first language. My peers offered to edit my papers, but after they did I was still unsure if was good enough. So, I decided to take my papers to the Writing Center so I could get a second opinion. The Writing Center has proven to be an invaluable resource for many of my papers ever since. I learned that for better editing I should print my papers out and read them aloud before submitting anything, but I never have. The Writing Center forced me to do just that. While I read it out loud I realized the exact points didn’t make sense in my essay.

About Me

Hello! My name is Isabel Polo I was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I am currently a freshman in American University studying Business Administration, but a little undecided because I truly have a passion for Science. Being the oldest one in my family made my parents be less strict with me than with my other siblings. They have encouraged me to travel and get to know where I live nowadays, without any problems and for that I am very thankful. I enjoy my time running or going to the beach back home and a fun fact about me is that I really enjoy watching movies or tv shows, so any recommendation are more than appreciated.

Albert Einstein

As Albert Einstein said, “Peace cannot be kept by force; it can be only be achieved by understanding.” To me that understanding, I interpret it as understanding that while there are differences between people all around the world, we really are similar on so many levels. We all want to live in agreement with everyone in our community.I feel that the words that Albert Einstein chose make this more powerful because it doesn’t refer to a specific thing, which allows it to be applied to many situation. I also see it as an understanding, that we really are all in this together no matter what. Right now, I am really shocked with the situation that is occurring in Venezuela because last week there was a video published about a woman crying for help to the world because she could barely support her family with all the government and social chaos that is happening in Venezuela. I connected what Mr. Einstein said with the problem In Venezuela because right now the government is trying to keep peace by using police force, which isn’t make it better because it motivates the people to fight harder against them.

Looking for new ways to relax and destress from school work I have tried watching old movies, tv series, reading books, meditating, exercising, but nothing has helped me feel better. Last week I gave a chance to Yoga. I read about a franchise CorePower Yoga, which focuses on not only changing your body, but to change your life. By being a first-time student I received a week for free and started attending, there I have met many students from American Universtiy, which I have really enjoyed meeting different people outside the campus. I truly feel less stressed out and I am enjoying this new passion of mine.

Office Hours

During my time in office hours with professor Hoskins we got the opportunity to get to know each other more and talk about many of my doubts. We discussed the different software’s we are going to be using and how to stay on track with all the assignments. I finally understood the utility of Zotero and Hypothesis, which I am trying to use for all my classes now. Also, I got to understand the class’  big project and how the mapping out project will work, I am still undecided on what location to choose, but I am planning on going this Saturday afternoon. I look forward on visiting professor Hoskins office this semester to better understand everything.
