Everyone in our group has very unique personalities, but this blend of personalities made our group work very well together. The dynamic of our group included a mix of type A and type B people, creative and organized people, and goal-oriented and more easy-going people. This balance of characteristics helped to drive our group towards accomplishing our goal, but also made sure that we had a fun time during the process. American University has given me so many tools to foster my growth as a student and as a person, and being involved in SPA Leadership has helped me to develop so many different skills and qualities to make me a better leader. Throughout our leadership classes and the creation of our project, I have been able to really pinpoint my strengths and weaknesses, and through this, I have used this new knowledge to grow even more in my leadership abilities.

My main leadership qualities revolve around uniting people, being empathetic and welcoming, and bringing energy and a creative spark into a space. A year ago that sentence would have been hard for me to write since I had no confidence in my abilities and felt like saying good things about myself was somehow conceited, but I have developed so much more confidence since then, thanks to the things I’ve learned in and outside of the classroom. With supportive and extremely insightful teachers and mentors, I think that I have become a much different person who is more confident in my knowledge and abilities and can use my strengths to get a goal accomplished. My peers have also been instrumental in my growth as a leader by uplifting me and being there to talk about important issues. But my peers have also inspired me so much by just being themselves. Their passion and unique skills and abilities have encouraged me to grow and given me so much to think about. Without SPA Leadership, I honestly would not be the person I am today and would not have been able to accomplish the great things that I have now. At the beginning of the project, we brainstormed the different ways in which we saw problems within the environment and how different environmental crises are being handled. We discussed the things we were passionate about and what we wanted to see change, and soon, we concluded that we were all passionate about fixing environmental racism and wanted to do a project that helped the earth and the people disproportionately affected by pollution. We decided that we wanted to do something involving urban gardens, and so we got started on the research portion of our project. The entire first semester we took a deep dive into the world of urban gardening, learning about the many benefits that helped to alleviate air pollution, food insecurity, and increase the overall health of urban residents. The first semester gave us a chance to really learn so much and marinate on what we wanted to do with this project.

Navigating this new virtual space was difficult, especially because our topic had such hands-on possibilities, but we eventually realized that we could make a substantial impact even if we didn’t get to plant a physical garden. After almost a year of taking classes and attending events on zoom, we felt as though we were able to get a message across by hosting a zoom seminar panel about urban gardening. So, we started to plan and organize our speakers and questions in order to educate people on the benefits of urban gardening. We were able to get three amazing speakers to be a part of our discussion, Ibti Vincent from FreshFarm, Vicky Keichel, an astute professor from American University, and Alex Morales of the Green Village Initiative. We also launched a social media campaign in which we designed posts in order to educate people about urban gardens, but also to promote our upcoming zoom discussion. Our Instagram gained about 85 followers and reached many more people through story reposts and shares. Then, after a few months of hard work, we hosted the zoom panel with 30 people in attendance! We were ecstatic to see so many people interested in urban gardening and hopefully, people were inspired by the discussion

This year, my SPA Leadership team and I completed an action project that aligned with our issue group’s topic: the environment and sustainability. My name is Jasmin Edrington. I was born in Burnsville, Minnesota, and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. I attended Resurrection Saint Paul School from kindergarten to 8th grade. Until the summer after 8th grade, my main hobbies included singing, theatre, and anything creative. But after completing my Girl Scout Silver award at a farm animal sanctuary, I became an environmentalist who wanted to save animals and to preserve the Earth’s beauty and resources. Throughout college I have become increasingly involved with the topics of environmental/climate justice and food justice. I have participated in and led environmental justice initiatives as Climate Justice Chair of AU’s Climate Reality Chapter, interned at the National Farm to School Network and FreshFarm, and incorporated environmental and food justice research into dozens of projects in school.

My major at American University (international relations with a focus on sustainability) will allow me to learn the skills to work with other countries in protecting the environment. I hope to further sustainability efforts at American and eventually the world. The Environmental Protection Agency, Green Peace, The Natural Resources Defense Council, and Conservation International are a few organizations I would like to work for.

Hi!
