Commonplace 17, The Art of Letting Go: Minimalism

April 29, 2017 by Jess Leave a Comment

So the egregious amount of boxes I had to buy to pack up my dorm room have made me think that maybe I should try something new, like minimalism.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy owning things. I love trying on clothes and having a plethora of options when I open my closet, but I also have to constantly remind myself that that isn’t where happiness comes from, and that’s what the guys in this TED talk are trying to remind everyone.

Not only does minimalism improve the environment, it frees your time to do interesting things, it improves relationships, and simplifies everything. So whether or not you are ready to do a full jump in, I think some important lessons could be taken form this talk.

  1. Your stuff doesn’t define you
  2. Relationships are more important that stuff
  3. Memories are more important than stuff
  4. Basically everything is more important than stuff
  5. GO OUT THERE AND DO SOME STUFF

While I’m not totally motivated to give up to 90% of my belongings right now, hopefully I get to apply some of the ideas share in this TED talk, and hopefully you do too. But mostly, just try to go out there an be happy.
