Toward a New Sociospatial Dialectic Analysis

In City of Rhetoric, Fleming believes that the city-like areas can be a standard that everyone in America should uphold because they are a perfect example of what a community should be like. He thinks that cities are a place where there is common ground since everyone is diverse and interesting in their own way. There is a distinct acknowledgement of acceptance that is more prevalent within cities than other communities like suburbs for instance. The places that have the most acceptance automatically attract the most diversity and vis versa. Fleming believes there will be more commonplaces if there were more diversity in these areas. He does not want every area to be in city form, they can remain suburbs but have the mentality that the city folks do. Have a sense of welcoming all that are like them or not into their established areas and not separating those who are not the same as them. Fleming states that “unfortunately, our picture of suburbia–for many people the promised land in contemporary America…” this is taken out of context for what people are expecting and what they end up receiving when moving to suburban neighborhoods.(Fleming, page 181) Fleming thinks that there is a certain mindset that people have when in the suburbs and when outsiders move in there is a distinguishable difference which separates people from connecting with each other. Fleming understands that it does not have to be this system and that people “could balance our often-conflicting needs for unity and diversity, accessibility and power, belonging and anonymity”.(page 180) By there possibly being this balance that can be created in these suburbia communities there is a clear solution to the problem. The only issue with solving it is how do you get everyone to participate?

Annotated Bib 3 & 4

“Welcome to 7th Flats | Luxury Apartments in the Shaw Neighborhood.” 7th Flats. Accessed March 27, 2017.
In this article, the unknown author established a substantial amount of information on this new up and coming area that was previously known for being dangerous territory. The website discusses these new apartment buildings that have been recently created to fit into the updated version of the area. They describe the establishment of the 7th Flats by saying it is “urban… alive… seductive” which are all extremely positive outlooks. The 7th Flats also are said to “redefine Shaw and the city that surrounds it”. The descriptions of the 7th Flats is seen as a benefit to the community and as an enhancement. The building is also located “right beside the Shaw-Howard U Metro” therefore making it accessible. All of the factors that this article characterizes these new apartments to be seen as a productive improvement to the surrounding area it is in.
I chose this article because it shows how the area seems to be reinvented because of these establishments that have just a while ago been created. The community seems to have had a different connotation than what this new building represents. In S Street Rising, Ruben Castaneda portrays this territory to be rough in a sense of unsafe and a ghetto. The way that this article depicts this new establishment proves that there has been a drastic difference over the years. By him expressing what the old area was and now reading this article it is evident that there has been a takeover of new people who want to make this neighborhood to their liking.
“Diverse Mix of Retail Shops Surround The Apartment Building | The Progression Place, Washington DC.” Accessed March 27, 2017.
This article written by an anonymous source explains the purpose for this new building created named the Progression Place. The name itself signifies a change from old to new and that is telling to the intent behind this establishment. This building holds “nine restored historic retail storefronts” along with “a diverse mix of dining, shopping, arts, nightlife and community serving amenities” which sounds like it lives up to the name of progression. The building holds a significant amount of space “19,000 square feet” to be exact. This building seems to have much influence on the upcoming future of this community because not only covers a large amount of ground but it will have a lot of the previously owned establishments apart of it. By having such a large presence on this neighborhood there must be a compelling amount of influence that will be created in the near future.
I believe that this article is helpful in the writing in my upcoming paper because it describes the new influence that is being pushed upon this community. While the community may be in favor of the new large influence there must have been other establishments that were there before. Now where are those other places that used to be what the neighborhood relied on? There might be progress seen by the people who are creating this new building but there is also a diminishing amount of influence that has always been there that no one can most likely replace. This article helps depict how the neighborhood’s previously grounded influence is being renewed by people who have just recently arrived.

Dealing with Ambiguity: The New Business Imperative Analysis

Business has changed and is not the once known black and white world that people expect. There are constant  adjustments and advancements made to the business world. People need to be aware the “ambiguity creates complexity and means decision making is difficult… ambiguity creates uncertainty and stress.” There is no clear cut way that business works there has been a “blur with the lines of responsibility and leadership.” This is something that people are not quite used to yet and “there are some companies that you compete with in one market but collaborate with in another.” Because of this, there is some uncertainty that is in the business world. People and companies try to create a specific system but “it is complex. There is no set guide for it. If there was, everyone would be doing it already.” But just because everyone does not have a set plan does not mean that there is not organization and other tactics that can be used to help. The article claims that ways to help is to “suppress your urge to control things” which will help with your “learning to deal with your stress.” One of the most important things to do is “listen to advice” and “listen to your voice” this will carry you to “be confident in yourself and your abilities” which is always necessary in order to help will organization and peace of mind. If you can also “learn to act without the complete picture” then you’ll be able to create more new innovative tactics and systems that will help you and others.

How To Get a Job At Google

Google has always been ahead of the curve and extremely innovative throughout the years. That is one of the main reasons that people choose to be apart of the team and movement. In order to get a job there the philosophy has changed and is nontraditional unlike other companies. According to Friedman’s research, “GPA’s are worthless as a criteria for hiring, and test scores are worthless… We found that they don’t predict anything.” This is a very interesting find especially since the average person puts a lot of their time and money into getting a great GPA. But for google they do not believe that is necessary 100%, in fact the “proportion of people without any college education at Google has increased over time now as high as 14 percent on some teams.” This is quite different to what most company’s are looking for in their candidates but nevertheless, it makes sense for Google. While GPA’s do serve as a minute purpose at Google since “Many jobs at Google require math, computing and coding skills, so if your good grades truly reflect skills in those areas that you can apply, it would be an advantage” but again none of this is an absolute necessity. What Google is truly looking for is “learning ability”, “leadership– in particular emergent leadership as opposed to traditional leadership”, and most importantly “feeling the sense of responsibility, the sense of ownership, to step in.” All of these factor into what Google truly needs and is looking for. They believe that “successful bright people rarely experience failure, and so they don’t learn how to learn from that failure” which is seen as a disadvantage for a company based upon problem solving.

Fleming’s Position On The Topic Of “Home”

In City of Rhetoric, Fleming claims that the one of the main problems with the projects and other low income housing in that there are different stereotypes that people perceive causing them to be less helpful and caring towards this community. For example, setting up the life for most of these people is more African Americans than other races which prohibits this race in different ways. Fleming stated that “Scattering black residents so thinly across the metropolitan region that they are never in a position to politically coalesce.” (page 149) Since these people are not given an opportunity to have a voice they are given no other choice but to be silenced. The people who live in these homes are perceived as “…people who are different from (and less than) the rest of us– as poor, dependent, and troubled” and that “…their neighborhoods are chaotic and disordered.” (page 150) Fleming believes that because of these impressions “…it has denied residents any long-term claim to those very neighborhoods.” (page 150) Fleming states that “according to the US Housing Act of 1937, “the term ‘public housing’ means low-income housing”.”(page 151) Some of the people who are in charge of creating or tearing down these developments believe “…public housing is by definition temporary, a steppingstone, not a destination” but that is not the case for most of the individuals that live there. (page 154) There was a woman who came to a panel about public housing and told them that “she had lived in public housing for forty-five years.” (page 154) For her, the public housing was not temporary and was her home. Outsiders see the projects to have “factors as high rates of unemployment, teenage pregnancy, single-parent  households, long-term dependency on public assistance and minimal educational achievement” but that is only what people looking in see. (page 153) They do not see the people for who they really are, people. Fleming believes that people in control of public housing should change it’s outlook and try and be more involved and relatable for those who actually live there.

Northwest Settlement House and Their Cause

Northwest Settlement House is located on 7th street and S street where many places have progressed since the book, S Street Rising by Ruben Castaneda was written. In S Street Rising, Ruben Castaneda explained in explicit detail of the event(s) he had witnessed in that area during the 1980s and 1990s. On this specific corner street, 7th street and S street, there was a shooting that he was documenting for his reporting job at the time. The  shooting took place on this exact corner therefore there is an abundance of history established in this section. Since there is a specific dilemma in the encircling area’s past many people within this area at the time were in an unsafe environment. The people that were in this area were uncomfortable and on edge with the consistently high crime rates. The infrastructure is directly on the corner of 7th street and S street. According to the web page, the first floor is the Madison Haven Apartments and the entrance to their section is the S street section with only a view from the perspective of 7th street.

On the main web page for Northwest Settlement House, there is a distinct, specific tone and impression that the audience receives. The tone is more of a relatable connection for all that view it. While the impression is more of an approachable aspect that shows people care, the website shows the certain parts of the Northwest Settlement House that are caring and catering to the community. The message that the Northwest Settlement House is trying to convey to the surrounding area and others who would like to take part in the cause, is able to be shown through pictures and specific statistics. These statistics compare their beginnings to their current numbers and how they have grown in a certain amount of time. Also how much larger they are going to be able to get in the upcoming years and how that itself will be affecting the community in such a positive way. Also the Northwest Settlement House explains how they help the people in need through their programs.

There has been a large change in the dynamics that the Northwest Settlement House has created and they fully express that through their website page. The website shows before and after pictures of the changes and progress that they have conceived. In the beginning photo that is on the website there is a clear difference as to what there was. There is a clear form that the website had set up in order to convey the exact message that suggested that there was struggle from where they have come from. The progress is shown in different ways through their website and these pictures show the look that they are trying to have. The web page is trying to express a different way to showcase to possible customers and donors that yes, there was a great deal of danger in the area previously, but now it has drastically changed. These pictures are able to express that the situation has changed because they physically show their potential. There are potential donors and customers who do not want to put money into an association that has not established anything or has not made a difference in a community that they claim to be helping. The web page picture of the before part of the building is able to show the beginning of the business along with how far the area has come. The before picture is the part that can express the worse parts of the area and how the area has truly changed over the times and how the Northwest Settlement House has been the cause of the drastic change that has been constructed throughout the years.

The main portion that is altered by the transformation was also highlighted in the second picture that was able to capture some of the parts that were particularly modified. The second picture was able to show the difference in the heights of the building which is quite interesting. The height of a building shows a dominant presence in the neighborhood which the residents are aware of. If there is more space to help those in need then more people are being helped therefore the progress is more visible. There is a clear difference in how there is now compared to then at least two more floors that were not previously there. With that being another factor there is a sense of a larger presence and respect quality to the area that this organization has been a part of for such a long period of time.

The picture also shows how there is a lack of greenery. The clear difference in greenery is also a clear sign that major changes in growth and development has occurred. In more trees being cut down there is more of an element that more has been built up and with that more progression in how the business is doing. Also the organization was established in 1934 according to the website, which goes to show how much the building has been through with the surrounding area and how it truly has history within the area and that the organization would not go to move anywhere else.

There is a fence as well in the old photo in comparison to how the other building looks without a fence. When there is not a fence there is more of a connection created between the community in comparison to there being a fence because people feel more welcomed when they are not restricted or deterred. Not only is the fence no longer there in the second photograph which shows more of an accessible attitude but there is also a feeling of safety. Since the fence is not within the second photo there is also an attitude that the people around are not being kept out for participating in either illegal activity or with other aspects the organization wanted to distance themselves from.

The ambience of the pictures and how they are placed within the article also represent a different way that the website targeted giving their message to their given audience. By having the pictures and the story being placed side by side there is more of a reference to the pictures and a connection to the story next to it. Instead of the pictures being at the top and the story being at the bottom there is an apparent distinguishing highlight on how the story has affected the transition from one house to another. With that transition being shown next to the story it further explains how they were able to reach the exact change they strived for in the beginning.

The picture of the children at the main header part of the website also established a certain tone for the audience through the website. The children are not models they are just typical children from the neighborhood. Having ordinary children is another aspect that encourages the audience to believe that the organization is not a fraud and is truly created in order to help these young children and their parents. There is more of a genuine quality that has been established with having average children be in the main photograph for the website. Their mission statement says that they are there “to offer developmentally appropriate early childhood education activities” and the pictures enhances the credibility that they are trying to have with their audience. Another aspect of the picture that seems authentic is that the picture was clearly taken on just a random day with the children that were already playing and having fun. The little girl to the left even is not looking at the camera and that shows another candid portion to how the website wants to be. The children are seen in a positive light that proves to the audience that the children genuinely enjoy the environment and are not just there solely because they have to be and do not have a choice. There is also a personal feeling that the audience receives being that the children are real and not just props that the organization used for the website.

Failure Is Progress

Beckett believes that there is no correct way to accomplish anything in life. He tries to tell his audience that will success comes failure and it is inevitable to endure it. There is no specific route that someone must take to be successful but no matter what they do by achieving progress they will have to go through failures first.

The simplistic form that is given by “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” is a way to show in a basic way that there is no special trick, format or fashion that life has to follow. There is just simply a straight short explanation for the reason for failure and the benefits of it. Using the “.” instead of a “?” or “!” shows again the simplicity of the situation and how there is no question or doubt. It simply is what it is. And there is no “!” because there is nothing outrageous occurring it is just life.

The Era of Spring Breakers

The typical spring break for college students is to go to some hot climate, like Miami or Cancun, with all of their other college friends and just get totally wasted. This is the mentality that many movies have depicted to most high school students and other younger crowds but that simply is just not the case.

As I have gotten older I have reached my first year of college and am now approaching spring break. I do not understand how people could possibly go on such trips when I will still be immensely stressed throughout break. For one the break is only for a week and that cannot be enough time for much. Also in my school you cannot stay on campus which is what I originally thought about doing because I did not see a point in going home only for a short week. I rather just hang out and chill with my friends from college but everyone is just focused on their parents and other family. Also I want to see my family that I have not seen in forever because I miss them everyday and want to see them whenever I get the chance.

The hyped up spring break is not a reality at all and truly the has turned spring break into an unrealistic expectation for younger teenagers to have for when they will be having their turn for spring break. There should definitely be a movie created that will show that spring break is not all that. All I will be doing is getting ahead for my second half of the semester and hanging with family and friends.

Choosing housing for next year was this week and I got into East Campus. I was ecstatic about making the cut but it was not easy. I had the first day of choosing but my time was slightly after midday. I was in class during the time so it was difficult for me to be the leader so I had to switch it to my future roomie, Skylar. She was the one who would not be in class at the time making her be the most available out of the two of us. We were both stressed about the whole situation because it was going to determine a lot for us next year. Skylar managed to get us the perfect room view a great view and everything. I’m glad that she was able to help and do what she needed to do. My professor for my specific time actually gave the 3 hour class I was in a break and I was grateful for that. It permitted me to be able to call Skylar and decipher which room we get the best vibes from. I am just ready and excited for sophomore year!

Hidden Figures No More

This movie, Hidden Figures, was awarded 2 Golden Globes. One Golden Globe was for best performance by an actress in a supporting role in a motion picture and another one was for best original score for motion picture. Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monae represented 3 women who helped in the NASA mission to put the first man on the Moon. They faced obstacles concerning their intelligence, not only as a woman, but as a black woman in America. They were reasons for such progress and received not an ounce of credit for what they achieved. The people who were above them  in ranking blocked out their names and were able to disclude them in their findings simply because of their race and gender. The movie was accurate in how the lives of these 3 women impacted American History.
