This movie, Hidden Figures, was awarded 2 Golden Globes. One Golden Globe was for best performance by an actress in a supporting role in a motion picture and another one was for best original score for motion picture. Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monae represented 3 women who helped in the NASA mission to put the first man on the Moon. They faced obstacles concerning their intelligence, not only as a woman, but as a black woman in America. They were reasons for such progress and received not an ounce of credit for what they achieved. The people who were above them in ranking blocked out their names and were able to disclude them in their findings simply because of their race and gender. The movie was accurate in how the lives of these 3 women impacted American History.
This song is by Kehlani who is a fairly new artist and she has this song on her latest released album. The song probably sounds like just any other song. It has a good beat and I enjoy the words but there was some aspect that caught my eye. The portion of the song that says “If it isn’t love, why do I feel this way?” This part sounded so familiar and then I was able to put it together, the words are from another song I am extremely familiar with. A New Edition song called “If It Isn’t Love”
Recently New Edition has been having a semi comeback because of the 3 part BET special event. This movie series was able to capture the true life and history of the group. The people in the group went through struggles involving money, drugs and women. There were many obstacles that they had to over come but they prevailed. Therefore many people are reliving or just now learning a lot of their iconic songs.
I feel like many people are either unaware of the original song or do not recognize it. If people do forget the origins of the certain phrases then the responsibility should be left to the artist who choses to reuse the song. There is a burden of responsibility left to the artist who recycles the words because they are choosing to work someone else’s work in their own. Also if there remake is a smash hit people deserve to know who actually came up with the phrase or dance that that person is now using.
Since Valentine’s Day is coming up I wanted to discuss my forever valentine, and it will always be my mommy. She has always been there for me and sister and always will be. We are a strongly bonded family and look out for each other to make sure we all are doing the best and being the best we could be. My mom is the best because she is there whenever I need her and that will never change. This picture shows how Valentine’s Day is not just a romantic holiday between couples but also dedicated to those that you love in life. My mom is the person that I love with all my heart and I know that that is the true meaning of Valentine’s Day. There is more to the day than people may see. There is a special bond certain people have and while I need no holiday to express my appreciation for my mother, it is also nice to show her how much she means to me on these special occasions. Never take advantage of your parents or anyone else that loves you.
The main message behind this quote is to inspire and help people progress further in life. You should never give up until whatever your goal is, is complete. You’ll never accomplish anything if you don’t finish anything. It is best to just push through and keep going. Struggle until you succeed.
Throughout college, I think about this quote often. I always try to remember why I started college and what I want to be when I’m older and how I’ll reap the benefits later on in life. I won’t stop making myself better. I may face certain obstacles but in the end I will reach my aim and you can too and it will definitely be worth it!
This song is “Man in the Mirror” by Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson was a revolutionary artist the would put real life issues in society in his songs. A part of the lyrics of the song are “If you wanna make the world a better place take a look at yourself and make the change” This is an expression of how it is important to work on yourself instead of just look at other people’s mistakes.
In life there will always be people who may try to tear you down and make you feel like you are not enough but remember that you can only be you. It is important that you become the best you in order to have the best outcome in life and the most positivity.
People should look more into themselves and perfecting that aspect rather than at others and their flaws. Make sure before you say anything about or to anyone that you evaluate yourself first. If more people focused on bettering themselves then the world in general will be a much happier place.
This gif is a scene from the show Scandal. The current character being shown is Rowan, the father of the main character, Olivia Pope. The general storyline of the show is that Olivia is the mistress of the President of the United States but mostly an extremely successful business woman who has a lot of respect and clout that she has gained over her years in D.C. In this scene, Rowan is yelling at her and saying “How many times have I told you, you have to be what?” She embarrassedly responds “You have to work twice as hard to have half of what they have.”
Personally, I have always enjoyed the show and watched it with my family but this quote meant something more to me than just fiction because my mom has always told me this. The quote is in reference to how as a black person, especially a black woman in America, has to put in twice as much work and effort but in the end will still receive “half” or a portion of what the white person would.
In the scene, Rowan is upset that Olivia has seemed to throw out all of her hard earned accomplishments when he knows that she does not have the option of making the same mistakes as her white counterparts. She has forgotten that she is not on the same level playing field. Her mistakes are more severe and threatening to her career and future than theirs because of stereotypes and other forms of discrimination.
This quote reminds me that I need to push myself as a black woman to achieve the unachievable despite others positions. I will probably never forget this quote because it gives me strength in how I have to change the world for me and the upcoming generation.
