Seeds are in!
After selecting our favorites out of several seed catalogs and sending out the orders, the seeds have arrived! Over the next couple of weeks, anyone on campus is welcome to coordinate with Jerri to see what’s ready to plant.
Mushroom Inoculation
Last Wednesday, Tracy Knapp from Common Good City Farms gave us a tutorial on mushroom inoculation. After drilling holes in a hardwood log, the mushroom spores were placed in the holes and covered with melted bee’s wax. Fun fact: this bee’s wax came from CGCF’s own bees! Any exposed wood or cracks were also covered with bee’s wax to help contain the moisture and help prevent other fungi from intruding. Lastly, a covering of leaves was placed over the log to make an optimal mushroom-growing environment. These Reishi mushrooms will take over a year – about 18 months – before they can be harvested. We’re looking into growing Shitake mushrooms as well, which take only 6 months til harvest. You can check out the mushroom box in the Amphitheater to the right of the path (near McDowell Hall).
