good standing can register for two types of independent studies: the Independent Reading course and Independent Research project.<\/p><p><strong>Learning by Leading<span style=\"font-size: 15px\">\u2122<\/span> seeks to support students interested in Independent Research projects relating to the environment and sustainability<\/strong>. Most importantly, the Independent Research project is not the easy way out of classes. <strong>The Independent Research platform is great for students who thrive outside of the classroom because it allows students to take control of their education<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p><p>After choosing a faculty advisor that aligns with your topic of interest,<strong> student and faculty must agree on the topic, title, scope, and credit value (1-6)<\/strong>. Since then, it&#8217;s grown from its humble garden root to a community dedicated to cultivating a collective and individual relationship with the earth.<\/p><p>The garden is an outlet for research and education outside the classroom. Students, faculty, and passersby are free to join the festivities, gardeners regularly host potlucks, garden parties, and other events.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>The Companion Garden:<\/strong> the small plot of land is home to numerous pollinators and students escaping the sun. This garden largely produces herbs.<\/li><\/ol><p>Fall 2021 the Community Garden unveiled the garden mural painted by club member, TreVaughn Ellis. Stepping up their community involvement, gardeners partnered with other sustainability clubs on campus to draw more awareness to local environmental issues.\u00a0<\/p><p>Currently, the garden is working on producing food for the AU Food Pantry, introducing local children to the joy of dirt, encouraging students to reconnect with nature, and engaging in weekly land acknowledgments.<\/p><p><strong>The Garden Club is a soft commitment<\/strong>. AU made a commitment to climate change and the beekeeping society helps sustain that promise by keeping an on-campus beehive on the Mary Graydon Center rooftop.\u00a0<\/p><p>While sleepy in the winter, the pollinators are free to roam campus maintaining our local ecosystem.<\/p><p>Admiring bees and observing the hive isn&#8217;t the only community action the beekeepers take! Once a semester the Beekeeping Society partners with the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcbeekeepers.org\/\">D.C. through leading.<\/p><p>Stephanie DeStefano, the Grounds Operations Manager in Facility Management, brought LxL<span style=\"font-size: 15px\">\u2122<\/span>\u00a0to American University. <span style=\"font-size: 15px\">Learning by Leading\u2122 at AU went on to enable the rise of sustainability clubs and inter-cooperation between them. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: In this role, he manages all recycling operations on campus and assists with waste sorting education initiatives. Before joining AU as a full-time staff, Jesse was an undergraduate environmental science major and an intern with both the Grounds Team and Zero Waste Office. Gardens, a position she has held since 2010. Cindy leads a talented team <strong>overseeing Smithsonian Gardens\u2019 archives<\/strong>, <strong>object and living collections<\/strong>, <strong>education<\/strong>, and <strong>web\/social media<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Cindy has worked in the field of horticulture since 1993, beginning her career in a nursery and serendipitously discovering the world of public gardens.
