Only women experience domestic violence.

False: 1 in 4 men experience domestic violence, and there can be violence and abuse in any type of relationship and to any individual. There is a lack of research on intimate partner violence or domestic violence in all groups and this helps perpetuate the myth that only women in heterosexual relationships experience domestic abuse.

It is easy to leave an abusive relationship.

False: Many people find it difficult to leave an abusive relationship and one of the most dangerous parts of an abusive relationship is when the abused person tries to leave. Look at the Stages of Abuse section below for more information.
