Nutrition-IQ (N-IQ) Summer Camp

N-IQ Summer Camp, in collaboration with Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Pinellas County, aims to improve the diet quality of Little Brothers and Sisters (age 10+) to decrease their risk of teen obesity.

First, a few helpful definitions:

  • A Little is a Little Brother or Little Sister enrolled in the BBBS program
  • A Big is a Big Brother or Big Sister volunteer
  • A Match is the pair of a Big Brother & Little Brother or Big Sister & Little Sister

The N-IQ Summer Camp program is proposed with the purpose of increasing the knowledge Little’s have for good tasting healthy foods, while increasing their skills and confidence with preparing food.

Big Sister and Little Sister (A Match)

Matches will draw from the N-IQ website repository of materials to support three once-a-week activities over the course of camp for one summer month. These include a local produce store tour to build awareness of fruits and vegetables providing rich sources of nutrients lacking in youth diets, followed by preparation of a recipe incorporating such.  The second activity involves the Match taking an inventory of equipment on hand in the Big’s kitchen, and sourcing items together in relationship to needs for the third activity: the Match chooses, shops for and prepares a main dish recipe.

In sum, N-IQ summer camp will facilitate more home cooking of healthy food by targeting both educational and environmental influences.
