In my first year, I was a member of the Education and Empowerment team. Here we focused on experiential learning for elementary school students and how this is much more effective and engaging than traditional course curriculum. This project concluded with creating and implementing experiential curriculum in two DC public school classrooms. For my second year, I took those first year skills and created my own project centered around rural food deserts. After creating a research paper and grant proposal, I partnered with the DC area food bank to conduct an on campus and virtual food drive to support local families in need.

In my third and final year in the program, I participated in an internship at the Heurich House Museum to practice leadership in action, along with the capstone course. Though my internship was virtual, I gained vital skills in museum education and nonprofit leadership that put my theoretical knowledge in practice. For the capstone course, I was able to review leadership theory and see how each practice plays out in real world leadership. After three years in this program, I feel confident in my abilities to become a transformational, democratic style leader in the museum field for my career.

Reflecting on My Learning Process

Within the program, I was able to put names to the leadership practices I have observed throughout my life. Often, I had heard of only “good” and “bad” leadership, but did not know that there were theories and practices each leader had adopted. Throughout the courses, I grew to understand the history of leadership theory, beginning with the Great Man Theory and resulting today in Transformational and Transactional Leadership. The SPA Leadership Program was instrumental in building my foundation for leadership practice. By understanding the theory, learning about case studies, and conducting my own research projects, I was able to build up my skills. I now feel confident entering my masters program and later career field with the intention of rising to a leadership role.

My View of Leadership

From my time in the program, I now view leadership as a learned skill that is always improving. A strong leader is someone who inspires, thinks critically and creatively, and empowers their team to rise to their full potential. Before enrolling at American University, I assumed that the best leaders were simply ones who had the right connections. With an academic basis in leadership, I now know that any person can educate themselves on best practices, find what style matches their preferences, and work to become a strong leader.

Key Takeaway

After completing my Advanced Leadership Studies Certificate, my key takeaway is about my own leadership style. I know that I enjoy and thrive off of collaboration, which leads me to prefer transformational, democratic leadership. When leading a team, I appreciate hearing each voice and am able to see where each person’s skillset can best serve our greater goal. I also tend to be future thinking, which allows me to inspire others and encourage growth, while allowing other team members to tackle specific details and smaller deadlines. Having an understanding of my own style of leadership allows me to aim for roles that serve me and has prepared me well for a museum career.

Professional Experience Heurich House Museum As the Education Department Intern, I was able to better my archival research skills, as well as develop curatorial experience through social media projects. Due to its size, this house museum has a staff of under 10, which has made my experience much more insightful than one at a larger institution. The purpose of this museum is to preserve, explore, and share knowledge about the life and family of Christian Heurich and, more recently, to extend that same effort into the stories of the household staff and brewery workers at the Chr. Heurich Brewing Co. Within my role, I am primarily a member of the education team, conducting archival research on household staff mentioned by Amelia Heurich, Christian’s third wife, in her collection of diaries.

Since archival research has its challenges and sticky points, especially in a virtual setting, I have also been working on two other projects within my role. First, I am creating a month long social media campaign with a fellow intern that uses oral histories from the Heurich’s relatives to discuss different areas of the family’s history. Some of our themes include gender roles in the workforce of the Gilded Age, the impact of German Heritage on Heurich’s business, and the legacy he left on the D.C. community. After selecting quotes from the audio, I have been working on research to bolster the content. Next, the social media intern will distill my information and create engaging posts for our Instagram follower. This project is an interesting combination of education work and curatorial work as it puts in my hands the responsibility to find, organize, and curate information that will educate the public on the museum’s work.

My second shorter term project has been with the museum’s director on more managerial aspects of the nonprofit. Firstly, I assisted in a review of the organization’s current document retention policy and suggested updates based on research into good leadership practices for nonprofits. This project will continue once I receive my second COVID-19 vaccination and am able to enter the museum to organize physical files and make sure that the policy is followed properly. In the meantime, I am assisting the director by establishing a succession of leadership plan. To accomplish this, the first step is to poll the other museum leaders on what parts of their duties they rely on the director to fulfil. The plan is to first send a Google form their way, and follow up with individual meetings so that I can collect the information for the director on what each staff member needs from her before a transition would occur.

These projects are fully engaging and assisting me well within the goals I established at the beginning of my semester. I wanted to better understand the archival research process, how education is promoted in a museum field, and how nonprofits, specifically museums, operate both day to day and in the long run. This community has fully embraced me and my learning goals, which has been a great change from some of my past experiences. I find myself learning more each day and have a great support system when I run into roadblocks. Since I am from Georgia, I decided to focus on the state as a case study of the South’s changing perspectives around politics and Confederate history. Using information from recent elections, polls, and protests, I concluded that Georgia demonstrates that the South is not a monolith and that many are resisting the power of stereotypes across the region. My project centered around dollar store companies Dollar General Corp. and Dollar Tree Inc. and finding a correlation between their locations and the location of food deserts. I used the 30 states with the highest number of food deserts and created a linear regression model to test my hypothesis that, in comparing states with high levels of food insecurity, those that have more food deserts will have more Dollar General Corp. and Dollar Tree Inc. store locations than those with less food deserts. This study found support for my hypothesis and encourages further study of how corporations may take advantage of vulnerable populations such as those living in food deserts. Originally from Rocky Face, Georgia, I am excited to be a part of the Washington, D.C. community. At American, I am pursuing an Interdisciplinary Degree in Communications, Legal Institutions, Economics, and Government (CLEG). I have also added a minor in Art History and a Leadership Certificate. I am a member of American University Scholars and the School of Public Affairs Leadership Program, as well as the Pi Sigma Alpha Political Science Honor Society. My love of learning and leadership began in high school and, through CLEG and the two programs I participate in, I have been given the chance to further develop my talents.

Outside of academics, I recently began an internship at the Heurich House Museum in Washington, D.C. I am working with their Education department to conduct archival research, write content for upcoming exhibitions, and assist with other museum tasks as necessary. This is a unique opportunity to engage with the D.C. community as the Heurich House has a rich history in Dupont Circle and operates on a much smaller scale than other major museums.

In addition, I have also joined the team of The Creative Process as an Associate Podcast Producer and Interviewer. My focus in this role centers around art history, curation, and sustainability. The Creative Process is in part a podcast that receives over 4,500 listens per day and also a creative traveling exhibition that shares interviews in a gallery setting. Guests on the podcast and in the exhibit have included the chief curators of major museums, Tony award winning writers and actors, contemporary artists, and others directly involved in current artistic fields. I am excited to be a part of this project and learn from the guidance of others in the curatorial field, which I hope to enter.

On campus, I am an active member of CHAARG, a new club on campus promoting female empowerment through a wellness-focused community. I am now serving as their Co-Event Coordinator, putting me in charge of coordinating with local businesses, making event plans, and communicating with our chapter. As a whole, we participate in weekly workouts, small groups, and host events (currently online) to foster friendship and personal health.

Also through my university, I am a member of the DC Reads tutoring program. Through this organization, I work four hours a week, one-on-one with students who are behind grade level benchmarks in reading. We use a curriculum created by the AmeriCorps program Reading Partners to bolster their literacy skills to ensure that they do not fall behind their classmates. Being a part of this program has been an amazing way to connect with the DC community and use my time to give back.

In addition to coursework and extracurricular activities, I enjoy going out into the city to experience new events and learn about new cultures. I spend my free time hiking and am currently pursuing a 200-hour yoga teacher training certificate. With the diversity of Washington, D.C., there are always new opportunities to learn and meet others. This pairs well with my love of art history, culture, and travel. I am passionate about people and our shared humanity, and learning about the world around me allows me to be a better leader.

      Facebook

      Linkedin

      Instagram

I am currently an undergraduate student at American University expected to graduate in May 2021.
