Commonplace 14: Aaron Hernandez

As a lifelong fan of Boston sports, I grew up believing that Boston sports players were titans. They live in a perfect world of glory and fanfare. Sports have always been a huge part of Boston and New England culture. The city is triumphant when a titan brings home a trophy. New Englanders never really considered what would happen if a Boston sports team member was not a titan at all.

Here is a photo of Aaron Hernandez from his days of playing for the Patriots.

This is why the murder trial of the New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was such a shock for the community. He was found guilty of the 2013 murder of Odin Lloyd. He was put into jail with a life sentence. Then, he was later charged with double homicide in Boston, but we acquitted of that crime. Nonetheless, Hernandez committed suicide in jail on April 19, 2017. Despite Hernandez’s criminal record, his loss has been a sad surprise for the Boston community. With Aaron Hernandez, the city of Boston and all of New England saw a downfall of a sports titan.
