My project will be compiled of two elements. My \u201cin-field\u201d experience will be through direct volunteering with a local organization called FAIR Girls, a non-profit that works to end human trafficking one life at a time through survivor-centered and trauma-informed services, prevention, and advocacy. This will be effective for my investment in the community and help towards the issue of my project however it will also be a means of educating myself and sharing my findings later on. This brings me to the second part of my project: the creation of an awareness-building social media campaign through an Instagram account. This platform will be devoted to raising awareness through posts about warning signs, surprising statistics, sharing stories, and inspirational quotes. Together, these two elements will put education, experience and support all into one social media account and presence where a community of awareness can be built between women, victims, and educators. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Hello, I am Maria Slava Prymak.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Originally from Hershey, Pennsylvania, I am a second-year student at American University, pursuing a BA in Public Relations and Strategic Communications with a minor in International Relations.<\/span><\/p>\n

In my first year with the School of Public Affairs Leadership Program, I worked alongside my peers to better understand how the typical understandings and common portrayals of gender roles and conventions contribute to the development of unhealthy, abusive, and toxic relationships. Many continue to struggle with confronting the reality of an unhealthy relationship, therefore, the need for open, honest dialogue, decisive action regarding toxic relationships, and domestic violence as a legitimate public health concern has become one of my most passionate priorities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aside from my involvement at American, my lifelong passion is figure skating. I have been a competitive figure skater since the age of five, competing in state-wide and national competitions. Recently, I became a Triple Gold Medalist in ice dance, free dance, and moves and the field. One of my favorite accomplishments is that I was featured in Skating Magazine<\/em> as part of the graduating seniors’ program.\u00a0\"\"<\/p>\n

Maria Prymak is a first-year student at the American University School of Communication, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Relations and Strategic Communications. She also plans on minoring in Internation Relations as well as a certificate in Advanced Leadership Studies from the School of Public Affairs.<\/p>\n

Maria is originally from Hershey, Pennsylvania. At American, Maria is involved with DC Reads, American University Television Network, No Lost Generation, and works as a Barista at the Davenport Coffee Lounge. <\/p>\n
