Scholarly and Professional Interests

I am studying a BA in International Studies in American University’s School of International Service. One of the courses I found to be of interest is the “Politics of Conflict & Conflict Resolution in Africa,” course where we read and discuss various subjects that relate to the significant role of regional or African domestic politics. Taking into account the role of regional politics in African countries is often sidelined. Particularly, in international development, programs or other forms of assistance. Another factor that is ignored is the role of ‘illegitimate politics/systems’ or patronage links with African state building. I found these elements to be eye-opening and would find connections with other instances in the international news as well as my own country (Indonesia). This has propelled me to ponder about the significant aspect of education for civilians. One can be easily swayed by the lack of accurate information and is a privilege that not everyone can receive.

I am also interested in refugee service, as an experience that also propelled me to ponder about refugee rights and a country’s role in assistance to refugees and related individuals. I had an opportunity to volunteer as a Preschool Teacher at a community-based refugee-learning center called “Roshan Learning Center” in Jakarta, Indonesia. From this experience, I was propelled to assist them through an educational perspective as well as observing the management of solutions towards refugee resettlement, education and lack of economic opportunities.
