Reflection – Deliverable 4\/29\/21<\/p>\n

I have found that the leadership program has helped me improve my research abilities a lot faster. Due to having to conduct my own independent research at a pretty early period in college, my research skills have always been pretty far ahead. This has served me well in a lot of my classes, where they are requiring more and more research with higher expectations. Additionally, I have felt lucky to have a family within leadership. It is so comforting to be surrounded by so many people who are just as driven and focused as I am. It has been easy to connect with many of my peers because we are so similar in that sense. I look forward to completing my capstone for leadership because I am excited to improve in the spaces I found trouble in this past year. I also am excited to investigate a new issue and see how I can contribute.<\/p>\n

Reflection – Deliverable 3\/1\/21<\/p>\n

My experience with my own social action project has provided me with an invaluable experience in working on a project. I have been able to utilize my leadership project in interviews for internships and other jobs. In general, I am finding that employers are impressed by the work I am doing, let alone doing it independently. I have received feedback that being able to adapt to situations, like COVID, is an important skill to develop. I have found that it has given me a sense of confidence that I know I can figure out and get through anything even if I have no clue on what I am initially doing.<\/p>\n

I have also found that many internship programs reflect what the SPA Leadership programs does. Internship programs sometimes consist of forming a group of interns to do a term project on a topic which is essentially what the SPA Leadership allows students to do. This excites me because it makes me feel like I am already reasonably experienced in what many internships are looking for. Based on this, I am overall greatly to be a part of SPA Leadership because of how it is allowing me to develop as a student and a future employee in my fields of interest.<\/p>\n

An active leadership role that I am currently working on is the External Director for Eaglethon<\/a>, American University\u2019s dance marathon charity. Eaglethon fundraises directly for Children\u2019s National Hospital, a local D.C. hospital located in the Columbia Heights region, to support the treatment and livelihood of kids with chronic illnesses. As the External Director, I manage the external affairs of our organization, including social media, marketing, advertisement, and recruitment. Within these different roles, I coordinate different projects in order to support our fundraising goals, such as recruitment pushes and connecting with other dance marathon organizations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This leadership role has challenged me, especially since the role went completely virtual due to COVID-19. The change has encouraged me to adapt to the role and to re-evaluate my approaches to different projects. I have pulled from many skills, including organization, collaboration, and creativity. Through this, the External team has connected with dance marathons in the D.C. area, such as HoyaThon, as well as even organizations farther from the city, such as the dance marathon at the University of Michigan! We have also supported fundraising efforts through consistent social media promotions. As a team, we are continuing to work and adapt as we move forward. <\/span><\/p>\n

Olivia Harwood is a sophomore at the American University in the School of Public Affairs, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Legal Studies and a minor in Political Science in an academically accelerated 3-year program as well as a certificate in Advanced Leadership Studies from the School of Public Affairs.<\/p>\n

Olivia is originally from London, England, but has lived in Tampa, Florida for the past fifteen years. At AU, Olivia is the External Steering Director for Eaglethon, a Dance Marathon Charity for Children’s National Hospital, and writes on the Constitutional Column for the Juris Mentem Undergraduate Law Review. She also works at AU Phonathon as a Fundraiser for the Alumni Association.<\/p>\n

Olivia has a passion for photography and photo editing, community service, and learning. As a student, she is interested in pursuing a path in law and politics.
