For Week 1
Week 1 | 1/12/2016 | Overview & Syllabus
A first discussion about the class, its goals, and its process.
DUE: Bring an object, an image, a text, or a selection of music that you experience as beautiful.
To help us all orient ourselves to what ‘beauty’ might mean, I’d like each of you to come to our first class with an object, an image, a text, or a selection of music that you experience as beautiful. You don’t need to know exactly why you experience it that way. But please bring something that has meaning and impact for you. Also consider the best way to share that item with the class — whether printed on paper, spoken aloud, shared as a computer projection, or played as a selection of audio. You don’t need to bring copies, just a single example. And if you’d like to show an image or play a clip, just let me know or bring it to class on a USB drive for me to play or show on my computer.
I will ask each of you to share your item with the class (for longer texts or audio files, I’ll ask you to share a short selection), and describe what the item is and what qualities about it seem to define or inform its ‘beauty’ to you. This isn’t a test. There aren’t “correct” answers. And you may not even have an answer about why you find it beautiful. That’s fine. Also, please don’t pick something because you think other people will find it beautiful, or because you think it will be easy to explain…focus on your own feelings and experiences of the work. It’s an opportunity to share and think together.
