In another strong weekend for AU Mock Trial, my team and I placed 2nd at Georgetown University’s Hilltop Invitational! This was the first tournament of our competitive season which will (hopefully) take us to Nationals. As a team we prepared two strong legal cases and presented entertaining and credible witness characters. We are taking advantage of the virtual format to include animated demonstrative aids using google slides and powerpoint. I created a map with moving icons and a chart to help organize the expert witness’ testimony, which both received praise from judges.<\/p>\n

In addition to our advocacy skills, AU mock trial was also recognized for our sportsmanship. We are honored to have received Georgetown’s Spirit of AMTA (SPAMTA) award which recognizes teams for being kind and fun to compete against. We were nominated by the teams we faced off against and received the highest score of all the teams at the tournament! I am proud to be part of a team that is not only incredibly talented but also fun to compete against!<\/p>\n

As the Logistics Coordinator for the AU Mock Trial Team, I encouraged our team to host an invitational tournament for the first time in five years! Due to COVID-19, this year’s college mock trial competitions are all being held virtually. While this has had its challenges, I believe it is also a unique and exciting opportunity to bring teams from across the country together for competitions since travel costs are no longer a concern.<\/p>\n

I volunteered to serve as the Tournament Coordinator, which meant inviting teams and advertising our tournament to fill our 16 team field with the highest level of competition, coordinating with the teams attending, designing a simple, easy to use, virtual tournament format, recruiting and communicating with volunteer judges, and running the tournament throughout the weekend. The 2020 Wonk Invitational ran efficiently, on-time, and without major technical difficulties. We were thrilled to host a field of 16 teams with 11 States, the District of Columbia, and even Toronto Canada represented!<\/p>\n

Before leaving for thanksgiving break, my peers and I from the Community Based Research Scholars (CBRS) program spent three hours volunteering with We Are Family, a DC based non-profit fighting food insecurity among senior citizens. The CBRS program encourages us to work with DC organizations to learn about and give back to the DC community. Issues of homelessness, poverty, and housing and food insecurity in the District are closely tied to issues of racial discrimination in the city’s past.
