“If Russia, or some other entity, was hacking, why did the White House wait so long to act? Why did they only complain after Hillary lost?”
This statement from President-elect Donald Trump came in response to accusations that the Russian government had played its hand in the outcome of this year’s election. Donald Trump has been outspoken against any idea that Putin and other officials at the Kremlin had any part in his electoral win on November 8th. His faith in the credibility of the election is rather hypocritical, considering along the campaign trail he argued that if he didn’t win it was a sign that the “system was rigged.” Now that multiple departments of the United States government are speaking out against what they have confirmed to be Russian influence, Trump is clinging to his victory over Hillary Clinton. With this tweet, Trump is speaking out to the people that likely already support him despite the accusations, because the followers that will see it significantly overlap with those that cast their vote for him. His drive to save face for himself rather than investigate what could be a serious blow to the free and fair elections that America touts may be a sign of what is to come with his presidency.
