“When they go low, we go high.”
This quote comes from a speech made by the First Lady, Michelle Obama at the Democratic National Convention. By this point in the election cycle, Donald Trump had solidified his persona as the candidate that is willing to say anything, whether that be crude comments about women or off-color remarks for media opponents. When Michelle stood on stage and put forth these words, she was addressing the democratic party. She was begging them not to stoop to his level and the level of his “movement.” The hateful rhetoric that they had been spewing to win an election based on racism and xenophobia was not something that Michelle wanted to see come from the left. The Democratic case would be made through turning the other cheek. The salience of the message was only increased coming from the First Lady, for over the course of Barack Obama’s eight years in the White House she has proven herself to be a icon of American grace and intellect.
