“Great to see so many investors come together to work towards a clean energy future. It’s a smart investment and it’s good for the planet.”
These words tweeted by President Obama in celebration of a one billion dollar clean energy deal have loaded context behind them. For months, protesters in South Dakota have fought against an oil pipeline being built across sacred Native American grounds. Finally, the army intervened and halted the construction. While the situation was heavily focused on Native American rights and respect, it also brought attention to the environmental effect the pipeline would have. Once the public conscience got on board the Obama administration had to intervene, but its delayed response damaged its reputation. When the President published this message, it was a subliminal reparation for the Dakota Access Pipeline blunder. He may have waited too long to stop the dangerous situation on the South Dakota plains, but look! He’s made a great stride in clean energy! His message targets environmental activists with short-term memory, ones who are willing to forget the near loss in light of this new victory.
