TRADE IN THE POLITICAL CROSSHAIRS

Implications for the Western Hemisphere and Asia

April 10, 2024 ㆍ 9:00am to 5:00pm

Founders Room, School of International Service

American University

In the past 6 years there has been a significant reorientation of U.S. trade policy that has important implications for trade relations, particularly with respect to trading partners in the Western Hemisphere and Asia.  Global supply chains are shifting, responding to increased trade policy uncertainty, sustained higher tariffs on some major trading partners, and increased business uncertainty that now aims to enhance the resilience of supply chains in the context of COVID-19, potential climate change disruptions, and an increasing emphasis on policies to encourage a green energy transition.

How will trade flows change?  Will there be increased reshoring and/or nearshoring?  What are the practical challenges around global supply chain realignments?  From infrastructure capacity to regulatory changes to a shift in the U.S. towards the aggressive use of industrial policies, businesses will still aim to optimize their risk vs. efficiency trade off.

In this conference we will explore the economic, legal, and political challenges that businesses in the U.S., the Western Hemisphere, and Asia, are likely to face in the coming years, with insights from leading experts including American University faculty, the broader Washington trade community, and business leaders.

Free and open to the public.
