My personal definition of leadership involves understanding that leadership changes based on the person and the situation. Leadership is adaption of the circumstances your in. It can also mean delegating control to someone else when it is best for the group.

Often in leadership studies, one is asked to list traits of a leader. In fact, even job interviewers will ask the interviewee the same question. However, if the leadership program has taught me anything it is that there is no single set of traits that define a leader. Each leader has to identify and find their own strengths and how these individual traits contribute to effective leadership. For example, I learned that I am most effective in emergency situations where other leaders would freeze. Identifying this skill has taught me what my own leadership qualities are; however, I recognize this is not the case for every leader.

And finally, I have learned that the most important part about leadership is that it isn’t about you. No leader should be looking for their moment in the spotlight or controlling a situation that isn’t meant for them. As I mentioned, every leader has their own set of leadership qualities or traits, a leader needs to recognize when their own skill set can be used and when it is for the best of the group that they delegate power to someone else. Being a smart leader is in part recognizing when they are not the best leader and can be better utilized elsewhere.

The SPA Leadership program has taught me so much about not only leadership theory, but my own outlook on leadership and experiences with it. There can certainly be traits that help, but no leader is truly the same. A military strategist could be one successful leader while another leader could be someone who sits behind a computer and sends directive emails all day. These two lead in very different ways, but in the right situation with the right people, each one is just as effective as the other. While I may feel like my outspoken and direct leadership approach is the best to command attention, ultimately there are just as effective ways to lead that are just the opposite.

             2. How have you experienced an increase in awareness of yourself and others in relation to leadership?

One of the biggest tools when discovering my awareness of leadership has been discovering my own leadership tools and methods. In the first year leadership retreat we discussed our top five leadership traits and how they are often demonstrated in leaders. My top strength was called command. Knowing and understanding this trait has given me better awareness of myself and my skill set, and also helped me in my awareness of others by understanding how I interact with them. This command trait I often see in myself because of my ability to thrive in emergency situations. In the face of danger and extreme tension I find myself very levelheaded and clear minded. This gives me the ability to better command the situation and delegate tasks. In this situation, the command trait is very useful, but I also understand from my awareness of other people that this trait is not as useful in calmer settings. This trait is something to be aware of both for myself and for my interactions with other people because as I’ve learned not all leadership traits are useful in every situation and there are moments where the command trait could damage the situation.

           3. How have you demonstrated the skills necessary to work collaboratively?

I think the biggest area in growth of leadership has actually been from learning to work collaboratively. There are leadership lessons to be learned from working with a group of strong leaders, and also lessons from being the leader. In the first year experience in the leadership program, I worked with the Public Health and Policy Issue Group, which was full of amazing leaders. I had an amazing teaching assistant who had lived all over the world, and worked with amazing students who had backgrounds in starting their own companies to drafting initiatives to their state legislatures’. This experience was very humbling as it taught me how working collaboratively as a leader doesn’t always mean being the leader. In my Issue Group we all had amazing ideas and contributions and responsibility was shared. I learned that to work collaboratively sometimes means being a leader of a specific part of the project while following for other parts while others lead. This is something I’ve carried on with me and experienced in my previous internships over years since this Issue Group. Moreover, I found that leadership is very intertwined with group collaboration as I worked side by side with a group of leaders.

         4. Have you built your theoretical and practical knowledge about leadership?

Throughout my four years in the leadership program I have built a theoretical and practical knowledge of leadership through events, retreats, group projects, and courses. For the first two years of leadership, the fall semesters focused very heavily on leadership theory. This ranged from more modern and accepted approaches like how leaders differ and change based on the situation and group, to old, traditional leadership styles where leaders are born not made. This theory has been the background and foundation for the practical knowledge I then developed through events, leadership retreats, projects, and internships. This practical knowledge was my opportunity to take the theory and test its relevance through social action projects and team based activities. For example, implementing the social action project with a group of other leaders showed the various styles of leadership proving the more modern approach that all leaders are different, which was extremely obvious through a group of differing leaders and styles.

          5. Describe how you better understand leadership as a process, not a position?

The best way I can explain learning leadership as a process is by explaining how leadership has evolved. In the first year of the leadership program we discussed leadership theory; this started with looking at how leadership started off with the idea that leaders were born not made. This would make leadership a position; it wouldn’t have been something you develop or study through a process, but rather something that exists in you or it doesn’t. It’s a position you hold and it doesn’t change or bend depending on the situation. However, modern leadership, which we later discussed, is a process. Meaning that depending on the type of leader or the people present, leadership changes. It is a process to adapt your leadership style to both the situation and the people. Meaning it isn’t a position where you act the same every time in every scenario, but a process which you develop and change as time goes on and circumstances evolve.

          6. Discuss how you have sought opportunities to enhance your leadership development and engaged in leadership behaviors.

Very recently, I had a fantastic work opportunity to put my leadership to the test, which gave me a chance to engage directly with all I had been learning throughout the last four years in my program. At the law firm I currently work part-time at, my boss told me she liked clerks who took initiative and made themselves irreplaceable. Often this is through being the “czar/czarina” in different categories we were working on or had cases in. Initially this was intimidating as I was very new to the job and felt like there was nothing I was remotely close to being an expert in; however, then I realized the leadership enhancement opportunity I was presented with. While this opportunity was intimidating it gave me the chance to take charge of a certain category and focus on it, be a captain and educate myself along with other people to assist our office. Now, leading team meetings on my subject and being the ‘go to’ person for work in this area is my favorite part of the day.

Reflecting On My Time in the Leadership Program How has your definition of leadership changed over the past year or during your time at American University? This is an executive, government organization that I consider to be rather unique because it is both federal and local law enforcement. Since MPD is within our nation’s capital, they are to enforce federal laws and have some federal responsibilities, while they also enforce the city of DC’s laws, which puts them on the local level. So for example, one of their federal responsibilities is assisting with presidential inaugurations along with other federal law enforcement agencies. However, much of the work I have been doing in my internship is working with local laws and being close to the people’s everyday crime reports.

This internship was very outcome oriented. While I would argue the police department as a whole is both process and outcome oriented, the Detective’s Unit alone focuses on outcome. This is because when they receive a case it means a crime has already been committed so they handle less of the crime prevention. Their goal is to solve the case and improve closure rates. At this point it’s how can they reach the outcome of closing the case or exhausting all possible leads. My role in all of this is following up on leads and assisting the detectives in their search. Often this is watching surveillance videos, creating and searching through case reports, and writing arrest requests (AFFIDAVITS).

My immediate supervisor was Detective Greene, or in his absence any other detective who I may be assisting. Detective Greene is a lead detective who has his own caseload, predominantly in theft and robbery, and also handles assigning cases to other detectives in the unit. In the office hierarchy, above the lead detectives, are the three sergeants who work different shifts around the clock. And above them is the Lieutenant. From here the hierarchy joins in with the patrol groups hierarchy and it progresses to captain, then commander, and so on until it reaches the Chief of Police. The patrol officers have their own hierarchy of sergeants and lieutenants.

Part of what I enjoyed most about this internship was that I don’t have a daily routine. My day always consisted of something slightly different. I almost always reported to the same detective and assisted him with his cases. I went on several follow ups, including, canvasing for cameras near crime scenes, notifying next of kin for hospital victims, and interviewing victims. I also attended two crime briefings with the lieutenant, and assisted with preparing a new safety kit program for MPD. And some days, I sit behind a desk searching through reports. Overall, I preferred my days being unpredictable. I argue that what makes a law moral is preserving an individual’s dignity. Moreover, justice is found when the punishment reflects the act or crime that was committed. Meaning the punishment should not be more extreme than what is necessary to prevent future crime. With this view of justice and morality in mind, I argue that Immigrant Detention Centers are unjust and immoral as a whole not because of what they were created to do, but because of the way they are currently being operated. The policies they use are unjust and immoral, which in turn makes the whole practice unjust and immoral.

Immigrant Detention Centers have been a ‘hot topic’ in recent politics due to the human rights issues it brings to light. As of now there are no regulations in regard to medical issues, transfers, communication standards, or religious obligations. Kant’s theory of right states that law is built around rights meaning law defaults to morality. If this is the case, there are certain rights that every human being has which must be abided by for these detention centers to be moral and just. As it stands, there are few rights actually given to illegal immigrants, which leads us to question the justness and morality of many acts that occur there.

The detention center as a concept may be implemented morally and justly; however, as they are currently run, this is not the case. One immoral policy is the family separation aspect that has been occurring since 2018. Morality is founded from the sentiments of mankind; this insinuates that ‘the people’ would call for a family to be separated. The majority of individuals wouldn’t call for the separation of families especially in such conditions. Therefore, if morality truly comes from the majority’s sentiments, such an act would be immoral. Dr. King’s evaluation would also find such an act to be immoral because it doesn’t “respect the dignity and worth of human personality”. These immigrants pose no physical danger to US citizens, but by separating families they are treated as if they are criminals who need to be separated and isolated even from each other. As humans, morality would demand they be treated as individuals with dignity and the right to be together. This leads into how the act is unjust; separating families for illegal entrance into the country is a punishment that isn’t proportionate to the crime. Punishments should only be what is necessary to create conformity to the rules. The punishment, in this case the separation while in detention, is far more severe than what is necessary to prevent this crime in the future. All that is necessary is a brief period of detention while the immigrant is being removed from the country; therefore, the act of separating children from their families is an unnecessary step in the process. This also doesn’t speed up the process in any way and therefore, is an additional stressor on the detainee that has no legitimate reason. Due to this evidence, I argue the separation policy is unjust and immoral.

Secondly, mass hysterectomies are another example of procedures done at the Immigrant Detention Centers that make their function immoral and unjust. Just this summer a whistleblower came forward with accusations of mass hysterectomies being performed on unwilling immigrant women in a detention center. An unwanted hysterectomy has no connection to the laws or crime committed, and the process of justice is determined by proper punishment being given to those who have been convicted under the law. Beccaria and Kant understand this justice and discuss the importance of punishment being in proportion to the laws. This punishment makes an irreversible change that has no correlation to the crime instead of creating a punishment in proportion to the crime committed. And, since this act is unjust it cannot be moral because a just law is created from the code of moral law. Morality is an obvious concern because these acts ignore human dignity and deprive immigrants of their rights. As Kant stated no man is without dignity unless he commits a crime that takes it away, and no moral policy will have a punishment that ignores women’s dignity. A bodily mutilation certainly is a deprivation of a common dignity. Every individual has the fundamental right to be treated as a person, which starts with the right to one’s own person. And since the right to one’s own body certainly affects one’s dignity, it is immoral to deprive women of this right in general. In summation, this practice ignores the foundations of just punishment and basic human dignity that we are all entitled to. Therefore, making the entire center unjust and immoral by the acts they tolerate.

Immigrant Detention Centers are designed to be holding facilities to detain people while they are in the process of prosecution and removal from the US. While the government has the job of using punishment as a means to show there is justice, that doesn’t mean the implementation of the punishment is always just and moral. The means pursued within the Immigrant Detention Centers, when put under scrutiny, are seen as unjust and immoral because they ignore punishment in proportion to the law and disregard dignity and basic rights.

Sierra Meredith JLC 308 Justice, Morality, and the Law Fall 2020 Morality and Justness of Immigrant Detention Centers What makes law so challenging is the differing theories on justice and morality.
