Sorángel Rodríguez-Velázquez joined the Department of Chemistry at American University as a professorial lecturer in 2013. She teaches General Chemistry I, General Chemistry II and Chemistry of Cooking.
Sorángel was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico. Her love for science motivated her to begin a career in chemistry at the University of Puerto Rico in Ponce where she spent two years and then transferred to the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez (UPRM) where she completed a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Chemistry in 2007. After graduating from UPRM, Sorángel realized her potential as a scientist and decided to pursue a doctoral degree in chemistry at North Carolina State University (NCSU). Graduate school brought her many challenges, including learning a new language and being away from home, but she knows that these experiences shaped her life in many positive ways. She received her doctoral degree in Chemistry from NCSU in 2013.
Sorángel enjoys cooking vegan food, watching documentaries and reading books. She is currently writing a recipe book and working on her certification in nutrition education.
